Kroot Warhammer 40K – Part 2 (Part 2 of 4)

The Kroot: A Species of Efficient Hunters

Physiology and Appearance

The Kroot, originating from the world of Pech, possess a unique physiology that suggests an avian origin. Their humanoid bodies feature vestigial beaks, light hollow bones, and four digits on each hand and foot. The skin is rough with small barbed spines and quills on their heads, which protrude from various locations on their flesh. Earthy brown colors, dappled greens, and vibrant oranges are just a few examples of the diverse skin pigmentation found among the Kroot.

Powerful Musculature and Movement

Despite their wiry appearance, Kroot musculature is extremely powerful, composed of dense fiber spindles that enable swift muscle contractions. This whiplash effect allows them to deliver powerful blows with great rapidity. On the ground, they move with a bounding, hopping gait, while in dense forests, they can spring from tree to tree at remarkable speed.

Variations and Markings

Depending on the feeding directions of the Kroot Shapers, each kindred’s coloration can vary significantly. Tribal markings are also common, painted onto their skin to signify specific affiliations. Kroot mature quickly, reaching adulthood by age twelve, and can live up to a hundred years or more, with their skin becoming increasingly pitted and leathery in old age.

Brain Structure and Function

Studies of Kroot brains reveal a front and rear hemisphere structure, with the larger frontal hemisphere controlling logic, reasoning, and memory. The rear hemisphere, less developed, is attuned to imagination and creativity. This unique brain structure may explain the Kroot’s pragmatic approach to life and their current technological stagnation.

Sensory Apparatus and Tracking Abilities

The Kroot’s head is crowned with tough, flexible quills that contain ganglia connected to their brain’s frontal lobes. These quills are extremely efficient at receiving and interpreting environmental information. Enlarged olfactory cavities and multiple sense organs within their mouth and skull allow them to detect subtle changes in their surroundings. Their eyes, without pupils, can see into the infrared spectrum, sensing body heat generated by prey. These adaptations make the Kroot formidable trackers and pack hunters.

Waste Generation and Pheromone Communication

The Kroot generate little waste, excreting it as a pungent, oily sweat with various properties depending on their diet. This sweat serves as insulation, has antibiotic properties, and can cause poorly aimed blows to slide clear. It is suspected that the Kroot can alter this secretion to leave pheromone trails, mark territories, and communicate with one another. Empathic pheromones may also be used to control lower life forms, preventing them from being startled and giving away the Kroot’s position in battle.

Language and Communication

The Kroot can learn new languages at an astounding rate, matching posture and tone to the sound of foreign words. Their own verbal communication consists of clicks and whistles, possibly reinforced by pheromone exudations. Primitive garb, such as harnesses made from animal hides and adorned with bones, is favored by the Kroot.
