Warhammer 40K Phalanx

The Mobile Fortress-Monastery of the Imperial Fists

Deep in the vast expanse of space, a formidable vessel stands vigil, a testament to the unyielding resolve of the Imperial Fists Chapter. The Phalanx, a gargantuan starship, serves as the mobile fortress-monastery of this esteemed Chapter, embodying the very essence of their unwavering dedication to the Imperium.

Origins Shrouded in Mystery

The origins of the Phalanx are steeped in mystery, with two distinct accounts emerging from the background material. One narrative, as recorded in the Index Astartes, suggests that the starship’s genesis is unknown, but it is believed to have been constructed during the Dark Age of Technology, predating the Imperium. According to this account, the vessel was discovered by Rogal Dorn above the planet Inwit, and upon encountering the Emperor for the first time, Dorn offered the ship as a gift. The Emperor declined, willing Dorn to utilize the vessel in his command of the VII Legion.

A Symbol of Imperial Power

The Phalanx is a behemoth of a ship, measuring the size of a small moon, its presence radiating an aura of power and dominance. During the Great Crusade, the sheer magnitude of the vessel served as a potent symbol of the Imperium’s might, inspiring awe and reverence throughout the galaxy.

Characteristics and Layout

The Phalanx boasts an impressive array of capabilities, with entire sections of the ship dedicated to emulating diverse combat environments for training purposes. The foredeck, capable of accommodating a dozen large cruisers, has developed its own ecosystem, complete with unique species of animal life that have evolved over time. The interior of the ship incorporates stone corridors, archways, and cathedral elements, housing Chapter honors and relics, including the revered Remains of Rogal Dorn.

Defenses and Notable Locations

The Phalanx is defended by the Auric Auxilia, an elite force sworn to protect the vessel and its occupants. Notable locations within the ship include the Strategium, the command bridge and headquarters of the Imperial Fists fleet; the Hall Martalis, where Aspirant recruits undergo training; the Temple of Oaths, a sealed shrine once reserved for those permitted to walk its halls without leave from Dorn; and the Cloister of Remembrance, a modern shrine housing captured trophies and battle honors.

A Legacy of Battle and Sacrifice

Throughout the ages, the Phalanx has borne witness to countless battles, its hull scarred by the ravages of war. From the Horus Heresy to the present day, the vessel has stood resolute, a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Imperial Fists to the Imperium. As the Phalanx continues to patrol the galaxy, its legacy as a symbol of Imperial power and resilience endures, inspiring generations of Space Marines to come.
