World Eaters Warhammer 40K – Part 8 (Part 8 of 11)

The World Eaters Legion: A History of Unbridled Ferocity

Early Years and the Great Crusade

The World Eaters, originally known as the War Hounds, were a Space Marine legion renowned for their unwavering commitment to close combat. This unrelenting ferocity only intensified under the leadership of Angron, their Primarch. Angron’s command did little to alter the legion’s organizational structure, but he did introduce a bias towards line infantry.

Tactical Doctrine and Combat Deployment

The World Eaters’ approach to warfare was characterized by their emphasis on drop-pod assaults, often deploying in the heart of enemy defenses to devastating effect. When necessary, they would advance under the cover of orbital bombardments or direct Titan support. While infantry assault was their primary strategy, the legion also possessed considerable armor and artillery units, which they employed with great skill.

Attrition and Replenishment

The World Eaters’ constant battles took a heavy toll on both manpower and materiel. However, they were able to offset these losses thanks to their alliance with the Forge World of Sarum, which provided them with a steady supply of arms and ammunition. The legion’s quartermasters and forges were well-stocked, allowing them to maintain their combat effectiveness.

Elite Units and Special Formations

The World Eaters did not have a large number of elite troops, but they did possess some notable special units. The most prestigious of these was the Devourers, Angron’s personal bodyguard. Comprised of 12 handpicked warriors, the Devourers were chosen through ritualized combat or organized competitions.

The Librarius and Psychic Warfare

One area where the World Eaters struggled was in the development of their Librarius. The introduction of Butcher’s Nails implantation proved disastrous for the legion’s Librarians, causing uncontrolled power surges and brain embolisms. Despite efforts to adapt, the Librarians continued to suffer heavy casualties, and their numbers dwindled over time.

Legion Strength and Organization

Estimating the total strength of the World Eaters is difficult due to their high casualty rates and rapid recruitment. However, Imperial records suggest that the legion had around 150,000 members at the outbreak of the Horus Heresy. Following the Battle of Skalathrax, the World Eaters shattered into disparate warbands, each operating independently.

Warbands and Recruitment

In the aftermath of the Horus Heresy, the World Eaters’ warbands developed their own recruitment methods. Some utilized twisted Khornate Apothecaries to create new, murderous monstrosities. With the return of Angron in M42, many prominent warlords rallied around their Primarch once more.

Notable Units and Chapters

Several notable units and chapters of the World Eaters are recorded in Imperial annals, including the 3rd Chapter, 9th Chapter, and 49th Chapter. These units played significant roles in the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy.
