Prior to their downfall, the Sons of Horus were consumed by an unshakeable conviction in their own superiority. This unyielding confidence drove them to achieve unparalleled success in the Great Crusade, with their flexible fighting force adapting seamlessly to diverse combat situations.
Efficient Command Structure
Each company was led by a captain, although not all captains commanded a company. The 1st Company, considered the elite unit, boasted two renowned squads: the Justaerin Terminator Squad and the Catulan Reaver Squad. These squads, and possibly the entire 1st Company, wore distinctive black-painted armor.
Tactical Flexibility
Companies contained mixed squad-types to ensure adaptability in battle. This included deploying Terminator Squads outside of the 1st Company. The legion’s primary tactic involved a decisive, surgical assault aimed directly at the enemy’s command element – a strategy known as the “Speartip.”

The Mournival, an informal advisory council, played a crucial role in finalizing and executing the Warmaster’s strategies. The secretive warrior-lodge, where marines of all ranks could mingle freely, fostered strong bonds of brotherhood and loyalty among individual marines.

The Sons of Horus recruited from Terra and Cthonia, with Cthonian gang-culture still evident within the legion by the time of the Horus Heresy. Gang tattoos were a common sight among the legion’s members.

The legion fractured into numerous warbands after the Siege of Terra, including the Sons of the Eye, Wolves of Horus, and True Sons. Most of these warbands were eventually destroyed or absorbed by the Black Legion.
