The Kroot: A Species of Xenos
In the far reaches of the galaxy, a humanoid species known as the Kroot has been discovered. Their origins are shrouded in mystery, but it is believed that they evolved from avian ancestors on their homeworld of Pech.
Early History and Union with the T’au
Thousands of years ago, an Ork Rok crash-landed on Pech, introducing the native inhabitants to advanced technology. The Kroot quickly adapted to this new technology, incorporating Orkoid DNA into their own genetic makeup. This led to the development of five primary “Hive” cities, factory farming, and mining. The Kroot also constructed their first Warp-capable spacecraft, known as Warspheres, allowing them to explore the galaxy.
However, their encounters with the Orks were marked by conflict, and the Kroot were eventually forced to flee their homeworld. It wasn’t until the arrival of the T’au Empire’s First Sphere of Expansion that the Kroot found a new ally. Together, they reclaimed the core Kroot worlds and liberated Pech from Ork occupation.
Biology and Appearance
The Kroot are a unique species, with a blend of avian and humanoid characteristics. Their bodies are covered in feathers, and they possess sharp talons and beaks. They are also skilled hunters, using their advanced senses to track and kill their prey.
Mercenary Work and Genetic Spoils
Many Kroot venture out into the galaxy as mercenaries, collecting useful DNA from their conquests. They then return to Pech, sharing their genetic spoils with the greater Kroot race. This practice has allowed the Kroot to evolve and adapt at an incredible rate, making them formidable opponents in combat.
Encounters with the Imperium
The Kroot’s first encounter with the Imperium was during the Damocles Crusade on the world of Sy’l’kell. Troops of the Brimlock 17th Dragoons were ambushed by Kroot Carnivores, resulting in heavy casualties. However, the Imperial forces were able to regroup and fight back, forcing the Kroot to retreat.
A Complex Relationship with the T’au
The Kroot’s relationship with the T’au is complex and multifaceted. While they swear allegiance to the T’au Empire, many Kroot continue to venture out into the galaxy as mercenaries. The T’au tolerate this practice, recognizing the value of the Kroot’s skills in combat. However, the Kroot’s primeval aggression and tendency to eat fallen enemies can be a source of tension between the two species.
Despite these challenges, the Kroot remain a loyal and valuable ally to the T’au Empire. Their unique biology and skills make them formidable opponents, and their ability to adapt and evolve ensures that they will remain a force to be reckoned with in the galaxy for years to come.
