The Fearsome Reputation of the War Hounds
As the Great Crusade raged on, the XIIth Legion, also known as the War Hounds, was fragmented into numerous independent commands, each comprising thousands of battle-hardened Space Marines. These detachments were ostensibly used as reserve forces, but records reveal they were frequently deployed as front-line assault troops in numerous successful campaigns, fighting alongside other legions such as the First Legion, Iron Warriors, and Space Wolves.
A Reputation for Ferocity
The War Hounds’ actions created a reputation that spread throughout the Crusade: they were known as vicious shock-troops whose actions came at a terrible cost. It was whispered that a War Hounds deployment had only two possible outcomes: glorious victory or utter carnage. Rumors began to circulate that the War Hounds were merciless towards anyone standing in their path, friend or foe alike. Stories emerged of the legion culling human regiments deemed inadequate, sparking widespread concern.
Internal Discipline and Isolation
One undeniable fact about the War Hounds during this time was their unusually harsh code of internal discipline, necessitated by their fractious nature. They deliberately kept their distance from other Legiones Astartes elements, fueling speculation about their true nature.
The 13th Expeditionary Fleet
The principal concentration of War Hounds astartes was grouped into the 13th Expeditionary Fleet, accompanied by dedicated support and naval elements. As the Crusade progressed, scattered War Hounds units were consolidated into the 13th Fleet, which became a melting pot of Imperial forces with questionable reputations for violence. Notable additions included the Titans of Legio Audax and the warriors of the Numen Gun Clans, both powerful elements shrouded in suspicion.
The “Bloody 13th”
The 13th Expeditionary Fleet’s war record led to its nickname, “The Bloody 13th,” in Imperial circles. It is believed that the War Council deliberately assembled this force to unleash massive destruction and loss of enemy life when needed. The Emperor himself reportedly referred to the 13th Expeditionary Fleet as a “carnival of monsters,” sparking concern about the Imperium’s true intentions.
A Force to be Feared
The War Hounds’ reputation preceded them, striking fear into the hearts of those who dared oppose the Imperium. Their actions would go down in history as a testament to the horrors of war and the unforgiving nature of the War Hounds themselves.
