The Dark City: Commorragh

Deep within the labyrinthine Webway, a realm between realspace and the Warp, lies the infamous city of Commorragh. Also known as the Dark City, it serves as the capital of the Dark Eldar society.

Origins

Commorragh’s history dates back to the ancient Eldar empire, when it was a prominent Webway port-city. Established in M18 as Port Commoragh, it became a crucial nodal point, enabling the transportation of fleets to vital planets. Due to its strategic importance, Commorragh was granted autonomy, attracting those who sought to hide their deeds. Over time, the city expanded, absorbing surrounding locations, and growing in wealth and influence.

The Fall of the Eldar

By M31, the Eldar civilization had collapsed, and the survivors retreated to the Webway. Commorragh, now a vast realm, came under the control of noble houses. Asdrubael Vect, Supreme Lord of the Kabal of the Black Heart, claims to be the founder of Commorragh and the discoverer of soul extraction. His dominance over the city was solidified by M35, following the Imperium’s raid that decimated the old aristocracy.

Invasions and Civil War

Commorragh has faced numerous invasions, including the Ork assault in 227.M38, led by Warboss Zoggit. The city suffered significant damage but managed to benefit from the attack by capturing 10,000 Greenskins for gladiatorial spectacles. More recently, the birth of Yvraine triggered a catastrophic Dysjunction, destabilizing the city and opening Khaine’s Gate. As Daemonic incursions became commonplace, Kheradruakh transformed part of the city into his lair, and various factions battled for supremacy.

Current State

Commorragh is sundered by civil war, with Vect’s forces seeking to quell Ynnari influence. Desperate measures have been taken, including the Black Throne project. The city remains a composite entity, comprising satellite realms and cities linked by portals and hidden pathways.

Regions and Satellite Realms

Commorragh is divided into regions controlled by Kabals, with ever-shifting boundaries. Notable regions include the Port of Lost Souls, Aelindrach, and High Commorragh. Vast numbers of satellite realms are connected to Commorragh via Webway portals, often becoming de facto parts of the city. These realms were created prior to the Fall of the Eldar, originating as playgrounds for cults of excess.

Notable Sub-Realms

  • Chasm of Woe
  • Pandaimon
  • Shaa-Dom

The Dark City’s Immensity

Commorragh’s scale is impossible to fully comprehend, but its historical records provide insight into its necessary size. Before the birth of Slaanesh, the Eldar numbered in the trillions. The city’s immense energy needs are met by the stolen suns, also known as Illmaea, which were brought from the Materium into webway sub-realms above Commorragh.
