The Inquisition: Guardians of the Imperium
In a grim, dark future, the Imperium of Man teeters on the brink of collapse. Threats from within and without seek to destroy all that is good and pure. It is in this bleak landscape that the Inquisition operates, a secret organization tasked with rooting out heresy and protecting humanity from the forces of darkness.
Unlimited Power, Unwavering Vigilance
Inquisitors are the agents of the Imperium, empowered to do whatever it takes to safeguard humanity’s future. They have absolute authority, answerable only to themselves and the Emperor. No one, not even the High Lords of Terra, can refuse an Inquisitor’s orders without good reason. This power extends across the Imperium, including the Adeptus Astartes and the Adeptus Mechanicus.
Efficiency Unbound by Bureaucracy
The Inquisition operates outside the normal channels of Imperial authority, unencumbered by dogmatic bureaucracy. There is no formal hierarchy or departmentalization within the Inquisition. Instead, authority is governed by reputation and influence. Seniority is not necessarily an indicator of authority, as wisdom and experience are valued above all else.
Ever-Present Danger of Corruption
Given their immense power and broad jurisdiction, corruption is an ever-present danger within the Inquisition. To mitigate this risk, the Inquisition engages in constant self-policing and scrutiny. The Ordo Malleus, a secretive Inner Order, was once tasked with monitoring the Inquisition’s integrity.
Judging the Guilty
Inquisitors have the absolute power to judge all who fall beneath their gaze. The Inquisition employs various methods to deal with the guilty, including arco-flagellation, Penal Legion conscription, and binding to a Penitent Engine. In extreme cases, entire worlds may be condemned to Exterminatus, a fate worse than death.
Ranks and Recruitment
While there is no formal structure of rank within the Inquisition, certain positions carry increased influence. Inquisitors can recruit acolytes from anywhere, and these individuals may pass through various “ranks” as they progress towards becoming full-fledged Inquisitors. Legate Investigators, for example, are identified by a Sigil of Question and a Carta of Inquiry.
Puritanism and Radicalism
The Inquisition is divided into two schools of thought: Puritanism and Radicalism. Puritans uphold Inquisition doctrine, while Radicals believe that the ends justify the means. This philosophical divide leads to friction between Inquisitors, but both sides share a common goal: the survival of humanity.
Sub-Factions and Philosophies
Within the Puritan and Radical camps, various sub-factions and philosophies emerge. Amalathians, Anomolian Beholders, Ardentites, Monodominant, and Thorians are just a few examples of the diverse perspectives within the Inquisition. These differences often lead to conflict, but ultimately, all Inquisitors strive to protect humanity from the forces of darkness.
Chamber Militant and Stormtroopers
Each major Ordo maintains a dedicated Chamber Militant, representing the most dedicated and effective forces at their disposal. Inquisitors also employ specially-trained Stormtroopers, known as Inquisitorial Stormtroopers.
Regional Conclaves and Unique Forces
Regional Inquisitorial Conclaves may have their own unique forces, such as the Stormwatcher Space Marine Chapter. These sanctioned blades of the Caligari Conclave exemplify the diversity and adaptability of the Inquisition.
In a grim, dark future, the Inquisition stands as a beacon of hope against the forces of darkness. With their unlimited power, unwavering vigilance, and unshakeable resolve, Inquisitors will stop at nothing to safeguard humanity’s future.
