Navigator Warhammer 40K – Part 8 (Part 8 of 9)

Navigating the Unknown: Unveiling the Mysteries of Navigators

In the vast expanse of the Imperium, a select few possess the ability to traverse the cosmos without reliance on the enigmatic Navigators. However, these alternative technologies are often shrouded in controversy, driven to the fringes of society by the Navis Nobilite houses’ quest for dominance over space travel.

Prohibited Technologies

Several forbidden technologies have been known to exist, including:

  • Prognosticators: Considered heretical, these devices enable calculated jumps that defy the capabilities of conventional cogitators.
  • Klenova Class M Warp Engines: Although still produced, their use is fiercely contested by the Nobilite, and those who employ them risk incurring the wrath of the powerful houses.
  • Immaterios Novis: This ancient technology, rumored to be of Xeno Hybris origin, purportedly eliminates the need for Navigators, facilitating faster short jumps that have piqued the interest of various factions.
  • Void Abacus: An archeotech relic from the Dark Age of Technology, this device allows for unpiloted jumps to be extended by a factor of four. While the Navis Nobilite cannot outright ban its use, they zealously acquire and destroy any Abacus that surfaces.

The Unlikely Union of Navigators and Space Marines

In rare instances, a Navigator may be transformed into a full-fledged Space Marine. The Ultramarines, for example, have been known to induct Navigators into their ranks, although such occurrences are few and far between. The White Scars Space Marines chapter is notable for its high number of Navigators turned brethren, who are seldom deployed in battle.

The Power of the Third Eye

When a Navigator succumbs to death, their third eye remains open, maintaining an inner warp gate for an indeterminate period. If extracted, this eye can become a formidable tool in the right hands. Conversely, it also poses a significant danger to those who would misuse its power.

Cannibalistic Practices and the Corruption of the Nobles

During the Carnivoration of Cel, three noble houses in the Askellon Sector engaged in a twisted practice where they fed their mhoxen stock with animals injected with cerebral extractions from ritually slaughtered Navigators. This heinous act led to widespread mutations among the nobles, demonstrating the corrupting influence of such dark powers.

The Psycharus Worm: A Halo Device of Unspeakable Horror

This brass grub-like device, when exposed to warp energies, animates and exhibits a terrible intelligence, granting it the power to control the dead and bend them to its will. When confronted with a Navigator, the Psycharus Worm instantly gravitates toward their warp eye, offering its dark power in exchange for access to the warp gate.

The Vulnerability of Navigators

Despite their remarkable resilience to the warp’s influence, Navigators are not immune to the corrupting effects of chaos. To shield themselves from this threat, some Navigators seek out Eldar Dreamstones, which also help alleviate the nightmares that can plague them after their duties.
