Night Lords Warhammer 40K – Part 2 (Part 2 of 7)

The Night Haunter’s Descent into Darkness

Konrad Curze, the enigmatic primarch of the Night Lords Legion, walked a razor-thin line between brilliance and madness. After his discovery by the Emperor, Curze underwent tutelage under Fulgrim, primarch of the Emperor’s Children, who introduced him to the intricacies of Imperial culture and military strategy.

The Philosophy of Terror

Curze’s experiences on Nostramo, where he assumed the role of the Night Haunter, instilled in him a profound understanding of the power of terror. He learned that fear could be a potent tool for maintaining order, and this philosophy would later shape the Night Lords’ military tactics. Swift, decisive strikes, often carried out to excess, became the hallmark of the Night Lords’ approach, leaving enemies shaken and aware of the Imperium’s wrath.

The Legion’s Reputation Grows

As the Great Crusade unfolded, the Night Lords excelled at reinforcing the Emperor’s will through fear. Their power armor adorned with death imagery, they inspired terror in those who dared oppose the Imperium. Planetary rulers, eager to avoid the Night Lords’ wrath, hastened to make amends and demonstrate their loyalty.

A Downward Spiral

However, as the Night Lords began to receive replacement Marines from Nostramo, the legion’s ranks became increasingly filled with violent and unstable individuals. This, combined with Curze’s own fragile mental state, marked the beginning of a downward spiral for the Legion.

Brotherly Betrayal

When Curze confided in Fulgrim about his prophetic visions and fears of the Emperor’s betrayal, Fulgrim, worried about his friend’s sanity, informed Rogal Dorn of the situation. Dorn, outraged by Curze’s perceived dishonor, confronted him, leading to a violent altercation. Curze’s subsequent arrest and confinement only served to further isolate him from his brothers.

Escape and Rebellion

Before the primarchs could convene to pass judgment on Curze, he escaped detention, slaying members of the Imperial Fists and Emperor’s Children in the process. Rejoining his legion, he took drastic action against Nostramo, the planet that had betrayed him, destroying it in a cataclysmic display of force.

The Horus Heresy Looms

The Night Lords’ rebellion, though a significant blow to the Imperium, was soon eclipsed by the outbreak of the Horus Heresy. As the galaxy teetered on the brink of chaos, the consequences of Curze’s actions, and those of his fellow primarchs, would forever reshape the course of human history.
