Nurgle: Warhammer 40K

The Plague Father: A Chaos God of Decay and Disease

Nurgle, the Chaos God of despair, decay, and disease, is a malevolent deity who feeds on the suffering of mortals. He is often referred to as the Plague Father, Fly Lord, or Great Corruptor, and his influence is felt across the galaxy.

The Birth of Nurgle

Nurgle was the third of the four Chaos Gods to awaken, emerging during Terra’s Middle Ages as plagues swept across continents. His birth marked the beginning of a new era of suffering and decay, as he brought with him a multitude of diseases and afflictions.

The Garden of Nurgle

Nurgle’s realm within the Warp is known as the Garden of Nurgle, a twisted paradise of death and pestilence. This unwholesome domain is home to every pox and affliction imaginable, and is alive with the stench of rot and decay. At its heart lies Nurgle’s Mansion, a decrepit and ancient structure where the Plague Father toils at his cauldron, brewing new diseases and afflictions.

The Daemons of Nurgle

Nurgle’s daemons are putrid in appearance and sickening to look upon, with skin filled with the fever-heat of corruption. Despite their disgusting appearance, they are often cheerful and energetic, taking pride in their work as they spread disease and suffering throughout the galaxy. The most powerful of Nurgle’s daemons are the Great Unclean Ones, massive and bloated disease-carriers who serve as the Plague Father’s champions.

The Followers of Nurgle

Nurgle’s followers are drawn from all mortal species, and are united in their desire to spread disease and suffering. They often pit themselves against the followers of Tzeentch, the Lord of Change, seeking to thwart their schemes for change with dull-minded conservationisms and parochial self-interest. The church of the Fly Lord is always open to new recruits, and those who join are promised a lifetime of suffering and decay.

The Legions of Nurgle

Nurgle’s armies are known as the Plague Legions, each of which is associated with a specific stage of the Plague Father’s cycle of decay and regeneration. The Fecundus Legions are tasked with creating new diseases, while the Infecticus Legions spread them across the galaxy. The Pathogenus Legions are disease incarnate, equal in both attack and defense, while the Epidemic Legions contain the most daemons, spreading outward to ensure that initial gains turn into rampaging outbreaks.

Notable Servants of Nurgle

Among Nurgle’s most notable servants are Mortarion, the Primarch of the Death Guard, and Scabeiathrax, one of the mightiest of the Great Unclean Ones. Other notable servants include Ku’Gath, a powerful Great Unclean One, and Epidemius, a powerful Plaguebearer and Daemonic Herald of Nurgle.

Gifts of Nurgle

As with all the Chaos Gods, Nurgle rewards his most favored followers with special gifts and blessings. These can take many forms, including physical mutations, daemon weapons, or particularly foul diseases. Those who receive these gifts are forever changed, becoming agents of the Plague Father’s will as they spread disease and suffering throughout the galaxy.
