The Unyielding Ferocity of the Space Wolves
Beyond their formidable prowess in battle, the Space Wolves are renowned for their unbridled passion for feasting, drinking, and storytelling. Unlike other Chapters, who adhere to monastic habits, the Space Wolves indulge in boisterous revelries, consuming vast amounts of meat and potent liquor known as Mjød. This perceived barbarism belies the discipline and focus required to maintain their status as one of the most formidable loyalist chapters.
A Unique Organisation
During the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy, the Space Wolves were a Legion led by Leman Russ, with a council of Wolf Lords, Wolf Guard, Rune Priests, and advisers known as the Einherjar. Each of the thirteen Great Companies was led by a Jarl, under whom served numerous Thegin or “Claw Leaders.” These, in turn, were divided into packs, kept in line by a Huscarl. This original organisation allowed for operational freedom, making the Space Wolves potentially the most dangerous loyalist chapter.
Perception and Intelligence
The Space Wolves’ reputation as brutes belies their sharp perception and peerless combat intelligence. They have honed their ability to notice every detail about their surroundings, using every scrap of information at their disposal. As Kasper Ansbach Hawser observed, “The wolves like to wrap themselves in a cloak of mystery and solemn, supernatural power, but such nonsense was the superstitious talk of barbarians… The truly abnormal thing about the wolves was the sharpness of their perception.”
The Great Companies
The Space Wolves consisted of 95,000-130,000 Space Marines, drawn from thirteen Great Companies, each with its own unique characteristics:
- 1st Great Company: Breakers of Rings, with 3,000 Terminators
- 2nd Great Company: Thread Cutters, with 800 Veterans and 60 Dreadnoughts
- 3rd Great Company: Eagle’s Keepers, with 9,800 Space Marines in Assault Squad and support armor roles
- 4th Great Company: Blood-worm’s Masters, with 8,600 Space Marines in Breacher Squads with self-propelled artillery
- 5th Great Company: Blood-Ice Storm, with 10,000 Space Marines in mixed roles with light support armor
Each Great Company was led by a Jarl, under whom served numerous Thegin or “Claw Leaders,” and was divided into packs, kept in line by a Huscarl. This organisation allowed for flexibility and adaptability, making the Space Wolves a formidable force on the battlefield.
