Squat Warhammer 40K – Part 3 (Part 3 of 6)

The Complex Society of the Squats

The Squats are a unique and complex society, comprising multiple independent communities known as Strongholds. While each Stronghold is self-sufficient, they maintain relationships with other Strongholds, forming alliances for defense, trade, and mutual support.

Leagues: The Building Blocks of Squat Society

These alliances often take the form of Leagues, which are headed by a single, influential Stronghold. The League leader provides defense and trade support to its member Strongholds, which may also identify with their leader on historical or cultural grounds. There are approximately 700 Leagues, varying in power and size, with the most powerful ones forming the largest united political structures in Squat society.

Examples of Powerful Leagues

Some notable examples of powerful Leagues include:

  • The League of Thor, comprising over 300 Strongholds and considered the most powerful League.
  • The League of Kapellar, the largest League in terms of size.
  • The League of Norgyr, located closest to Earth.
  • The League of Emberg, the smallest League, consisting of only four Strongholds and situated near the Eye of Terror.

Alliances and Rivalries

Alliances between Strongholds can date back thousands of years, with some forming loose federations to share duties such as patrolling space and defending against enemies. However, rivalries between Leagues can lead to open warfare, resulting in lasting enmity between Squat factions. A notable example is the conflict between the League of Thor and the League of Grindel, which lasted for centuries and caused significant destruction.

The Guilds: Preserving Knowledge and Technology

During the Time of Isolation, the Squats developed a complex system of Guilds to preserve and advance their technology and knowledge. These Guilds collect and archive information, train specialists, and develop alternative technologies. Guild Engineers fulfill the role of scientists and technicians in Squat society, ensuring the free passage of information between Homeworlds and Leagues.

The Role of Guildmasters and Living Ancestors

Guildmasters play a crucial role in advising Kings, Squat Generals, and other leaders, while Living Ancestors serve as advisors and form an inalienable link between the Strongholds and the past. These individuals move freely between Leagues, providing guidance and wisdom.

Fighting Brotherhoods: The Military Forces of the Squats

Each Stronghold’s fighters are organized into fighting Brotherhoods, led by their own commanders. These Brotherhoods form the military forces of the League, providing defense and support to their member Strongholds.

Squat Technology: A Unique Blend of Innovation and Tradition

Squat technology is a distinctive blend of innovation and tradition, developed through the Guilds and the preservation of ancient knowledge. Their unique machines and advanced technologies have allowed the Squats to thrive in their isolated environment, making them a formidable force in the galaxy.
