Thousand Sons Warhammer 40K – Part 5 (Part 5 of 11)

The Thousand Sons: Chaos Sorcerers of the Warp

The Thousand Sons, a legion of Chaos Space Marines, have undergone significant changes since their dedication to the Chaos God Tzeentch. While their combat doctrine remains largely unchanged, their organization and approach to warfare have been altered by the Rubric of Ahriman.

Psychic Trickery and Deceit

The Thousand Sons have long favored psychic trickery and deception over close combat. With the development of Chaos Sorcerers and the Rubric of Ahriman, this approach has become even more pronounced. Those marines affected by the Rubric are used as anchors for an attack’s firepower, while sorcerers deploy their psychic powers in accordance with a previously constructed plan of deceit or guile.

Legion Organization and Structure

Despite their transition into a Chaos Legion, the Thousand Sons have retained much of their original organization and structure. However, their lack of interest in vehicular or heavy armor support has led to a decline in their traditional armor. Instead, they often scavenge or steal such items during raids, but these repurposed goods rarely last long.

Warbands and Raids

The Thousand Sons now operate primarily as small warbands, seeking out conglomerations of psykers or traces of sorcerous techniques using artifacts known as Seer Stones. Their actions are varied and often curious, with the goal of furthering the manipulations of Tzeentch. The most well-known of these warbands is the Prodigal Sons, led by Ahriman.

The Rubric of Ahriman

The Rubric of Ahriman was a spell cast by Ahriman and his conclave of sorcerers to save the legion from the fate of mutation. While the results were not what Ahriman expected, he was satisfied with the outcome. The Thousand Sons were safe from the taint of chaos, but at a terrible price: those untouched by the flesh change had their psychic powers strengthened, while those who had already mutated were reduced to dust and their animate spirits damned to live inside their armor forever.

Vendetta against the Space Wolves

The Thousand Sons have long been arch-enemies of the Space Wolves chapter, seeking revenge for the destruction of Prospero. They have attempted to uproot and destroy the Wolves on several occasions, including a full-scale invasion of Fenris and plots spearheaded by the sorcerer Madox.

Notable Engagements

The Thousand Sons’ defeat at the Battle of the Fang marked the end of their existence as a legion. The loss of several senior legion members, squads of Rubric Marines, and nearly all of their mortal minions has left the Thousand Sons a shadow of their former selves.
