Ullanor Crusade: Warhammer 40K

The Pinnacle of the Great Crusade

The Ullanor Crusade marked the zenith of the Emperor’s Great Crusade, a monumental campaign that showcased the Imperium’s unmatched power and heralded the rise of Horus as Warmaster. It was a battle of epic proportions, culminating in victory against one of the largest Ork empires ever encountered. Yet, amidst the glory and triumph, it sowed the seeds of humanity’s darkest hours.

The Battle for Ullanor

The Ullanor Crusade brought together one of the largest Imperial forces ever assembled. Over 100,000 Space Marines from the Luna WolvesUltramarines, and White Scars Legions, alongside 8 million Imperial Army troops and a fleet of hundreds of spacecraft, descended upon the heart of the Ork empire ruled by Overlord Urlakk Urg.

The assault was quintessential Horus—decisive, bold, and relentless. The plan centered on dismantling the Ork command structure with surgical precision. Drop pods and heavy shuttles delivered Land Raiders, Predators, and the power-armored Space Marines directly into the fight. Meanwhile, ground forces advanced with overwhelming firepower, smashing through Ork defenses.

Horus led from the front, teleporting with a detachment of Terminators into the heart of the Overlord’s tower. Within the grand central chamber, the Primarch confronted Urg and his elite guard of forty massive Orks. With his lightning claws, Horus tore through the Greenskin warriors, each strike a testament to his martial supremacy. In the climactic duel, Horus bested Urg in single combat, delivering a decisive blow to the Ork empire.

The Aftermath

The death of Urlakk Urg shattered the Ork forces’ morale. Panic swept through their ranks, and the retreating Greenskins were cut down by the advancing Luna Wolves. With their Overlord slain, the Ork empire disintegrated into warring factions, and the Imperium reclaimed the quadrant within a year.

The Triumph of Ullanor

To commemorate this monumental victory, the Emperor of Mankind ordered a grand Triumph on Ullanor. The scale of the event was staggering:

  • Millions of Servitors, Thralls, and prisoner-slaves flattened an entire continent using geoformer engines, creating a massive, mirror-smooth granite parade path.
  • Over 8 million Imperial Army soldiers, thousands of armored vehicles, and hundreds of Titans from the Collegia Titanica marched in procession.
  • Fourteen Space Marine Legions were in attendance, showcasing their unity and might.

The skies were filled with aircraft from the Imperial Armada, and the parade culminated in Horus himself, hailed as the hero of Ullanor.

Horus Ascends as Warmaster

During the Triumph, the Emperor shocked all present by naming Horus the Warmaster of the Great Crusade, elevating him above his Primarch brothers. To mark this honor, the Luna Wolves were renamed the Sons of Horus. The Emperor also announced his withdrawal from the front lines, entrusting Horus to lead the Crusade in his stead.

This moment marked a turning point—not just in the Great Crusade, but in the history of the Imperium. Though hailed as a glorious new era, the seeds of division were already sown. Many of Horus’s Primarch brothers resented his elevation, and this jealousy would fester into betrayal.

The Road to Disaster

The Imperium believed that the ork threat had been broken forever. This complacency proved catastrophic in M32, during the War of the Beast, when an Ork WAAAGH! reached Terra itself, wreaking havoc on the Imperium’s military might.

Even more tragically, the political and emotional fallout of Ullanor set the stage for the Horus Heresy, the civil war that plunged the galaxy into chaos. Horus’s elevation to Warmaster and the Emperor’s retreat from active leadership drove a wedge between the Primarchs, ultimately leading to Horus’s descent into treachery.

Legacy of Ullanor

The Ullanor Crusade is remembered as the pinnacle of Imperial might and ambition. It was the moment the Imperium stood unchallenged and triumphant. Yet, it also serves as a grim reminder of the fragility of unity and the dangers of complacency. From the ashes of its glory rose the horrors of the Horus Heresy, marking the beginning of the Imperium’s long slide into stagnation and despair.
