Ultramarines Warhammer 40K – Part 6 (Part 6 of 7)

The Ultramarines: Defenders of Humanity

Organization and Structure

As one of the most respected and revered Space Marine Chapters, the Ultramarines adhere strictly to the Codex Astartes, the sacred text penned by their Primarch, Roboute Guilliman. With approximately two-thirds of all Space Marines tracing their origins to the Ultramarines, it is no wonder that they are considered the paragon Codex chapter.

The Ultramarines are divided into ten Companies, each consisting of 100 Marines, as prescribed by the Codex Astartes. The 1st Company remains the Veteran Company, while the 2nd through 5th are Battle Companies. However, with the advent of the Indomitus Crusade, the 3rd and 5th Companies have been heavily fractured, spread out across several strikegroups from the Cadian Gate to the Eastern Fringe.

Companies and Roles

  • 1st Company (Veteran Company)
  • 2nd-5th Companies (Battle Companies)
  • 6th-7th Companies (Strategic Reserve)
  • 8th-9th Companies (Close Support and Fire Support)
  • 10th Company (Neophyte Scouts and Vanguard Squads)

Leadership and Notable Figures

  • Roboute Guilliman (Primarch of the Ultramarines and Lord Commander of the Imperium)
  • Agrippa (Chapter Ancient)
  • Severus Agemman (First Captain)
  • Uriel Ventris (Captain of the Fourth Company)

Ultramarines Honour Company

During the Horus Heresy, the Ultramarines Legion played a minimal role in fighting the Warmaster’s forces. As a result, a number of Ultramarines Primogenitors Chapters contributed individual squads to a standing force near the Eye of Terror known as the Ultramarines Honour Company.

Recruitment and Trials

The Ultramarines continue to recruit from the worlds of Ultramar, with a strong emphasis on Macragge’s Ultramar Auxilia Juventia for Aspirants. The Chapter utilizes two types of trials: the Exposure Trial and the Challenge Trial.

  • Exposure Trial: Aspirants must survive for a set period in a wilderness environment, often on Death Worlds, Desert Worlds, or Ice Worlds.
  • Challenge Trial: Aspirants engage in a duel with a full Battle-Brother, with the trial measured in degrees of failure.

Vehicle and Equipment

The Ultramarines employ a range of vehicles and equipment, including:

  • Land Speeders
  • Bikes
  • Tanks
  • Land Raiders
  • Gloriana Class Battleships
  • Rapid Strike vessels

The Fulminata

The Fulminata is a newly formed demi-Company of the Ultramarines, composed entirely of Primaris Space Marines.

Conclusion

The Ultramarines stand as defenders of humanity, upholding the principles of the Codex Astartes and continuing the tradition of recruiting from the worlds of Ultramar. Their leadership and notable figures are renowned throughout the Imperium, and their unwavering commitment to duty is an inspiration to all who follow in their footsteps.
