Warhammer 40K: Dark Age of Technology

The Golden Age of Human Innovation

In the distant past, humanity experienced a period of unprecedented scientific and technological advancement, known as the Age of Technology. This era saw the rise of visionary scientists, engineers, and innovators who became the new leaders of society. Spanning from M15 to M25, this golden age was marked by an explosion of exploration and innovation that transformed the course of human history.

The Dawn of Genetic Engineering

During this period, humanity’s mastery of science led to the development of genetic engineering. Scientists experimented with modifying the human genome, creating tailored gene-troopers and pushing the boundaries of human potential. The creation of the Navigator gene enabled humans to navigate the currents of the Warp, facilitating faster and more accurate space travel.

The Emergence of Psykers

As human knowledge and power grew, so did the presence of psykers. These individuals possessed unique abilities that allowed them to tap into the Warp, manipulating energy and matter at will. By the end of M22, psykers had become ubiquitous across human worlds, heralding a new era of human evolution.

The Downfall of the Age of Technology

However, humanity’s rapid advancement came at a terrible cost. The proliferation of psykers led to Daemonic possession and incursions, while others claimed godhood over entire worlds or instigated reality collapses. Terrible wars ravaged star systems, and the Cybernetic Revolt brought humanity to the brink of destruction. The emergence of warp storms isolated many planets, and trade between human worlds collapsed.

The Legacy of the Age of Technology

Despite its downfall, the Age of Technology left an indelible mark on human civilization. The technologies developed during this period remain the foundation of modern society, and the Imperium continues to seek out and worship relics from this era. The Standard Template Construct systems, created during this time, contain all human technological knowledge and remain a crucial component of modern civilization.

The Men of Stone and the Warp Drive

Two notable creations from this era are the Men of Stone and the Warp drive. The Men of Stone were artificers who existed in a state of “half-life,” protecting them from the perils of the Warp. They created the Men of Iron, servants that eventually rebelled against humanity. The Warp drive, developed by M18, enabled spacecraft to make short Warp-jumps, facilitating the colonization of the galaxy.

A New Era of Exploration and Discovery

The Age of Technology may be lost to the ages, but its legacy lives on. As humanity continues to explore and discover new worlds, we are reminded of the ingenuity and innovation that defined this golden age. The Imperium may never regain the heights of power and knowledge achieved during this period, but it remains a testament to the boundless potential of the human spirit.
