Title: “Brothers in Arms: The Story of Argel Tal and Khârn”
In the vast, dark chasms of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, few partnerships stand out as vividly as that of Argel Tal, the once-respected captain of the Word Bearers, and Khârn, the infamous champion of the World Eaters. These two warriors, seen by many as polar opposites, were bound by a bond deeper than any battlefield could forge – they were brothers.
Argel Tal, known to the Neverborn as a brother, was renowned for his wisdom and his ability to foresee their shared fate – a death under the shadow of immense wings. Despite their differences, primarily over faith, methods of warfare, and views on Primarchs, Argel Tal and Khârn remained steadfast allies.
Khârn, a World Eater known for his reckless abandon in battle, decried Argel Tal’s ritualistic torture of enemies. His objection wasn’t to the cruelty itself, but the dark sorcery it entailed, which he deemed blasphemous. Despite their disagreements, the two found common ground in their shared trials, often fighting side-by-side in the arena of the Conqueror, bound by chains as tradition dictated.
Their bond and mutual respect were so deep that Argel Tal once asked Khârn to help him abduct the remains of Cyrene Valantion from a group of cultists, in a desperate attempt to resurrect her. This was not a decision taken lightly; Argel Tal had been manipulated by the cunning Erebus, who warned him of impending danger and guided his thoughts towards resurrection.
Despite warnings from Lorgar about the risks of dealing with Erebus, Argel Tal’s guilt over the death of Cyrene and his desire to bring her back overpowered his better judgment. Argel Tal, along with Khârn, retrieved the confessor’s remains and handed them over to Erebus. The resurrection ritual was a gruesome affair, condemned by Khârn as an abomination not worth its price.
The ritual, however, was successful. The once-blind Cyrene Valantion was resurrected, her sight restored. Argel Tal felt a great weight lifted, free from the guilt that had plagued him. This relief, however, was short-lived as Erebus’ words about the imminent demise of Khârn began to haunt him.
In the ensuing battles, Argel Tal, now more focused on Khârn’s well-being, fought alongside him, ever-vigilant of the predicted danger. During the intense battle on Nuceria, Argel Tal’s sole mission was to protect Khârn from the unknown enemy. Despite the exhaustion and the multitude of wounds, Argel Tal managed to keep Khârn alive.
However, the prophecy that Erebus had made was actually for Argel Tal himself. In a shocking betrayal, Erebus plunged a dagger into Argel Tal’s back. Argel Tal, in his weakened state, was caught off guard. His demon companion, Raum, vanished, likely perishing due to the unique properties of the dagger.
Despite his fatal wound, Argel Tal fought on, displaying the same defiance in the face of death that he had shown throughout his life. The tale of these two Space Marines – Argel Tal and Khârn – serves as a testament to the complex relationships that can arise even amidst the chaos of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Their bond, their trials, and their ultimate fate are a powerful reminder that in the grim darkness of the far future, there are no easy alliances.
