In the enigmatic, grim darkness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, we find ourselves immersed in the intricate, unfolding narrative of Argel Tal, the newly appointed master of the Serrated Sun Chapter. A Word Bearer’s tale of trust, transformation, and tumultuous battles that forge the essence of the legendary Gal Vorbak.
Argel Tal’s journey begins with inexplicable changes that stir within him, a metamorphosis beyond his comprehension. His psyche is plagued by an odd compulsion to utter curses in tongues he doesn’t recognize, and a peculiar hunger for the presence of Cyrene Valantion, a woman he paradoxically yearns to consume. However, these perplexing details remain a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces for nearly half a century.
The battlefield becomes a crucible in which the Gal Vorbak’s transformation takes its full form. In a prelude to the monumental Battle of Istvaan 5, Argel Tal and his brethren wrestle with an unsettling weakness that nearly robs them of consciousness amidst the throes of combat. An inexplicable period of debilitation follows, triggering alien responses within Argel Tal. He experiences nausea in the company of outsiders, an emotion akin to fear, and a troubling sensitivity in his armor that mimics the sensations of his own flesh.
A harrowing self-inflicted test reveals a shocking truth – his armor possesses an uncanny ability to self-heal, the cut sealing itself with a scar. His helmet becomes an inextricable part of him, its face shield adapting, feeling, and a pair of claws sprout from his gauntlets. Convinced that he’s at the brink of death, Argel Tal retreats to the chambers of the Confessor for three nights. Yet he emerges, changed but alive, his armor now an inseparable part of him.
As decades pass, Argel Tal forges a deeper bond with Aquillon, divulging secrets he’s withheld even from the Confessor. Yet, he accepts the inevitable, that one day he would be compelled to kill his comrade. Meanwhile, Cyrene Valantion, the confidante of the Word Bearers, remains oblivious to Argel Tal’s darker deeds – his ruthless, indifferent torture of mortals.
The Serrated Sun’s Chaplain conducts dark rituals, distorting messages to Terra while Argel Tal bears witness to the horrific annihilation of sixty-four individuals, their souls extinguished by the agonies inflicted by Chaos.
On the cusp of the Battle at Istvaan 5, Argel Tal hears the voice of Raum, a demon claiming to have infiltrated his very being. The demon proposes a symbiotic relationship, a precarious balance of power, promising Argel Tal control in exchange for shared possession of their body. Such a pact could spell doom for many, yet the denizens of the Gal Vorbak remain steadfast.
The Battle of Istvaan 5 becomes the gruesome stage for the Word Bearers’ formidable transformation. Argel Tal’s armor melds into his skin, his legs morph into hooves, wings burst forth from his back, and horns crown his helmet. This monstrous form renders him far superior to ordinary Space Marines, his claws now lethal weapons. The entire Gal Vorbak undergo similar grotesque metamorphoses, becoming terrifying, spiked creatures with weaponized limbs. Yet, even this newfound power doesn’t render them invincible, as one of their own falls to the Raven Guard’s flamethrower, a death Argel Tal feels keenly.
