Welcome back to our multi-part series where we delve into the fascinating depths of Warhammer 40,000 lore. Today, we are shifting our lenses to the Triolian system, a place of refuge and intrigue. Our main focus? The brilliant geneticist Ezekiel Sedan, the unyielding tech-priest Belisarius Cawl, and their intertwined fates in a desperate pursuit of immortality.
Ezekiel Sedan, the second director of the Biotechnical Division, was a man of great age, his life no longer extended by rejuvenation treatments. Desperate to continue his work for the Emperor indefinitely, Sedan sought the knowledge of cloning and soul merging held by Belisarius Cawl. In a twisted attempt at immortality, Sedan planned to fuse his psyche with Cawl's, hoping that his personality would re-emerge as the dominant one. To force Cawl's compliance, Sedan ordered his servant, Altrix Hinia, to shoot Cawl's companion, vowing to restore their life if the tech-priest agreed to the fusion.
However, upon the completion of the fusion procedure, it was Cawl's personality that prevailed, not Sedan's. In this shared consciousness, Cawl experienced Sedan's old memories, including a poignant encounter with the Emperor of Mankind during the early stages of the Unification Wars. In a prophetic vision, the Emperor foresaw Sedan's fate and tasked Cawl with continuing his work, a responsibility that both terrified and inspired the young tech-priest.
Following the conclusion of the Horus Heresy, Robut Guilliman, the First Lord Commander of the Imperium, entrusted Cawl with two significant tasks. First, the creation of the life-sustaining Armor of Fate, and second, the preservation of The Emperor's Sword, a blade imbued with a fragment of the Emperor's divine power.
Leveraging his newfound expertise in genetics from the soul fusion, and the purest genetic material within a device known as the Sang Primus Portum, Cawl accomplished a monumental feat - the creation of the Primaris Space Marines and the establishment of the Ultima Founding in the year 999 of the 41st Millennium.
Over the course of 10,000 years, Cawl underwent profound changes. From a tech-priest who once despised cybernetic augmentations, he gradually transformed into a being more machine than man. His consciousness, an intricate weave of souls thanks to the soul merging technology, continued to evolve. Despite having to purge data every 500 years due to limited capacity and undergoing mind-wiping, Cawl's genius remained unmatched, earning him the title of Prime Conduits of the Omnia, or Dominatus Dominos, Master of Masters.
Ever active, Cawl dedicates himself to a multitude of projects, from constructing Mars' largest Macrom Mag Cannon to perfecting his stasis fieldwork, to conducting endless experiments within his city-sized laboratories in Mars' extensive underground complexes. His pursuits are often carried out in secret, with independent minds created to monitor and hide them from numerous enemies. Within the sealed vaults, countless experiments await the scrutinizing gaze of Cawl's multifaceted Servo-eyes.
Intriguingly, whenever Cawl reloads his stored memories, he becomes distracted and often takes several solar decades to recover within his own stasis crypts. Yet, these extended periods of inactivity spur him on to once again embark on the quest for knowledge, donning the mantle of Aros Dominus, and gathering about him further mysteries and enigmas. Join us next time as we continue to unravel the complex, thrilling world of Warhammer 40,000.
