Welcome, fellow lore enthusiasts, to another dive into the grim, dark universe of Warhammer 40,000. In this installment of our multi-part series, we focus our attention on two dreadfully fascinating factions – the Khornate Berserkers and the Noise Marines. These are not just your average Space Marines, oh no, these warriors have been transformed into something far more sinister and deadly.
Let’s start with the Khornate Berserkers. Feared by many, these relentless killing machines had their ferocity and pain tolerance amplified exponentially through the insertion of a device known as the Butcher’s Nails. This brutal transformation turned the entire World Eaters Legion into an uncontrollable force of savage killers, accelerating their descent into darkness and complete fall from grace.
The Berserkers, now devoted entirely to Khorne, the Chaos God of blood and war, are driven by a singular focus – to sever heads, spill blood, and dedicate each kill as a sacred act of worship. Their god’s throne is built from the skulls of their enemies, and the Berserkers are all too eager to contribute to its construction.
Now, the weapon of choice for these warriors is typically the chain axe, a terrifying tool that leaves a bloody wake in its path. However, if deprived of their preferred weapons, these killing machines won’t hesitate to use bare fists, heavy rocks, or any object within reach to continue their violent onslaught. Their unending rage and lust for battle are what define them, making them almost insensible to anything other than the act of killing. Even without external enemies, they may turn their rage upon each other – a spectacle that Khorne finds just as satisfying. After all, for the Blood God, all bloodshed is a tribute.
Let’s shift our focus now to the Noise Marines, the sonic warriors of Slaanesh, the Chaos God of excess. These notorious warriors are most commonly found within the Emperor’s Children traitor Legion. They are infamous for their use of overwhelming sonic weaponry, disorienting and demoralizing their foes with barrages of deafeningly loud, psychosonic and pyrotechnic assaults.
The inception of the Noise Marines dates back to the Horus Heresy, over 10,000 years ago. They were the twisted creation of Fabius Bile, the chief Apothecary of the Emperor’s Children. His forbidden experiments aimed at enhancing the genetic makeup of Space Marines beyond their original design led to the emergence of these warriors.
Noise Marines possess an auditory perception that is extraordinarily acute, driven by their insatiable craving for auditory stimulation. The battlefield’s chaotic cacophony and their enemies’ anguished screams are their auditory bliss. Their signature weapons, from the Sonic Blaster to the Doom Siren, exploit their enhanced hearing and the destructive potential of concentrated sound to devastating effects on the battlefield.
One unique ability that Noise Marines possess is the Warp Scream. This potent sonic explosion can disorient and debilitate enemies, adding another layer of terror to the battlefield. Their modifications and experiences make them uniquely sensitive to sound, driving them to seek ever greater auditory sensations, becoming addicted to the chaotic symphony of warfare.
As we journey further into the Warhammer 40,000 universe, these factions represent the grim and terrifying extremes of what Space Marines can become. So, tune in next time as we continue our exploration of this dark, fascinating universe. Until then, may the Emperor protect you.
