Grim Realities of Life Outside the Imperium – Part 8

In a universe shrouded in eternal conflict, today’s chronicle explores the captivating lore of Warhammer 40,000, focusing on the Emperor’s Children and the devoted followers of Khorne. So, sit back and delve into the grim darkness of the far future.

The Emperor’s Children, once a proud legion of the Emperor’s chosen soldiers, have devolved into a macabre caricature of their former glory. Despite the purple hue of their meticulously maintained armor harking back to their noble origins, their existence is now solely driven by an insatiable lust for intense sensations and novel pleasures.

The third legion’s current form is a splintered mosaic of warbands, each with its unique appearance and traditions, honed over the course of 10,000 years. Some warriors, like Casaros, cling to the faint hope of reviving the legion, with or without their primarch. However, it’s irrelevant to most whether they are led by the primarch himself or one of the former captains. Their mission remains constant – to lay waste to world after world, for in the future there is only war.

On the other end of the spectrum are the followers of Khorne, infamous for their unending carnage and lack of cold-blooded sanity. These warriors live on the precipice of rage, ready to attack anyone to satiate the blood god’s thirst for fresh bloodshed. Even these ferocious warriors cannot defy the laws of the real world, eventually running out of enemies or ammunition.

Life as a follower of Khorne is fraught with hardships, often self-inflicted. In their pursuit of slaughter, they often neglect the fundamental needs of an army. The supply system of these warbands primarily depends on the spoils of their raids. However, after their violent escapades, usually, nothing remains but a blood-soaked wasteland and pyramids of skulls. As a result, these warriors often face starvation, and their equipment falls into disrepair. Yet, the followers of Khorne are not strangers to cannibalism, and their own ranks often become their next meal.

Khorne’s followers, like unleashed rabid dogs of war, charge into the enemy ranks with berserk fury, praising the blood god with new deaths, uncaring for their own lives. For Khorne, it does not matter whose blood is spilled, offering one’s own skull is just as acceptable as offering the enemy’s. Yet, this thirst for battle is both a gift and a curse. It makes them invincible on the battlefield, but outside the fight, it leads to unnecessary losses and often results in the loss of essential support personnel like Tech Marines and Apothecaries.

The life of a mortal servant in a Khorne warband is far from easy. The Imperium, albeit heavily restricting their rights, still considers its subjects as people. In contrast, no matter how fierce a warrior a mortal may be within a warband, he remains merely a servant to his superhuman masters, who have long ceased to regard him as a person.

In the grim darkness of Warhammer 40,000’s universe, the Emperor’s Children and Khorne’s followers offer a fascinating study of fallen angels turned into insane killers, illuminating the harsh realities of eternal war. Be sure to stay tuned for the next installment in this multi-part series, as we continue to explore the captivating lore of Warhammer 40,000.
