Lorgar Aurelian – Architect of the Horus Heresy – Part 9

Title: “The Divine Dilemma: Lorgar’s Journey of Faith and Redemption – Part One”

In the heart of the cosmos, deep within the swirling maelstrom of celestial bodies and ancient mysteries, a tale of faith and defiance unfolds. This is the journey of Lorgar, the golden Primarch of the Word Bearers Legion, and the existential crucible he found himself trapped within. Caught between his steadfast faith and the harsh rationality of the Imperium, Lorgar’s tale is one of struggle, revelation, and a relentless quest for truth.

In their midst stood Kor Phaeron, a figure of wisdom and mentorship, who assured Lorgar that redemption was within reach if he did not wholly abandon his faith in the old gods of Kus. This seed of faith, carefully nurtured, was not unique to their homeworld, but resurfaced in various forms across numerous planets. Such religious echoes, far from being mere human fabrications, were a testament to a greater truth, an underlying significance that transcended mere coincidence.

This shared belief was the cornerstone of the Word Bearers Legion, upheld by their first chaplain, Erebus. In the solitude of his Primarch, Erebus pledged his life on the strength of Lorgar’s faith, a testament to their shared conviction. For weeks on end, only Kor Phaeron and Erebus witnessed the turmoil within Lorgar as he grappled with his beliefs and the truth of the cosmos.

A startling confession came from Kor Phaeron, who revealed his clandestine preservation of minor faith cults on conquered planets. Shocked, Lorgar was driven to the brink of strangulation, only to halt as he realized his own potential for similar actions given foresight and mercy. The implications of such choices were unknown, but the prospect of a different history was tantalizing.

Despite their troubled relationship, Erebus and Kor Phaeron persuaded Lorgar to retain his religious worldview and embark on a quest for truth. This journey began with the composition of his new magnum opus, a testament to his changing perspective on the cosmos. His work complete, Lorgar emerged, spirits high, a clear plan in mind.

However, the watchful eyes of the Imperial forces, including the ever-present Custodes, were a constant restraint. To counteract this attention and implement his plan, Lorgar had to employ subterfuge. He transformed the Word Bearers into a ruthlessly efficient Legion, a façade that masked their underlying religious sentiments and showcased a triumphant transformation.

Lorgar, often perceived as a weak warrior and strategist, was as talented as any other Primarch. His apparent weakness was a product of his desire to wage war for his own reasons, a desire that led to his condemnation by the Emperor. However, when he needed to disguise his religious quests, he displayed his true prowess, turning the Word Bearers into one of the most efficient fleets of the Great Crusade.

This transformation, however, was but a smokescreen for Lorgar’s true mission – a pilgrimage into the unknown, an ancient rite in pursuit of divine truth. The first step on this path was to seek guidance from his brother, Magnus the Red. Lorgar believed that Magnus, with his deep understanding of war, could point him in the right direction. Despite Magnus’s warnings against such a quest, Lorgar was undeterred. The threat of annihilation could not quench his thirst for knowledge and understanding.

As the legion’s main fleet continued the Great Crusade under the leadership of Kor Phaeron and Erebus, Lorgar embarked on his pilgrimage with a small contingent of ships. His expedition traversed the most remote sectors of the galaxy, guided by a chorus of voices that spoke to him in dreams and reality. Convinced that the Emperor was wrong to condemn humanity’s instinctual search for deities, Lorgar sought to find if there were great powers deserving of adoration and love.

Meanwhile, the Word Bearers, under the watchful eyes of the assigned Custodes, continued to conquer worlds. Reports of their success and transformation reached Terra, but the Custodes accompanying Lorgar on his pilgrimage remained silent, too distant from the throne world to use the astropaths’ telepathic services. However, as they reached the orbit of an uncharted planet, the guiding voices grew louder, echoing an irresistible call to the truth that lay just out of reach.
