Welcome back, Warhammer enthusiasts, to another thrilling instalment in our Warhammer 40,000 series! Today, we will be delving into the awe-inspiring world of the Imperial Guard, a division of skilled trench warfare and fortified position breakthrough specialists. Their unmatched prowess is a testament to their intense training, influenced by the Cadian Shock Troopers, the ‘Hammer of the Emperor’.
These stalwart soldiers, forged in the cruel crucible of a never-ending war with the heretics on their home planet, are the embodiment of resilience and courage. Even a nuclear holocaust did not subdue their spirits; instead, it honed them into true experts in prolonged sieges and massive offensives. They are the warriors who proudly sacrifice themselves in the Emperor’s name, atoning for the sins of their distant ancestors.
Yet, Warhammer 40,000 is not just about the glorification of military prowess. It’s a saga that often pushes the envelope, incorporating absurd manifestations of past or present military traditions. Take, for example, the Catachans, experts in sabotage and jungle warfare. These hardened warriors, clearly modelled after American troops during the Vietnam War and inspired by the iconic image of John Rambo, are an effective fighting force in their own right.
Then, there are the Vostroyan Firstborn, a peculiar mix of various Slavic military cultures from the late 16th to early 17th centuries. Their bright red attire and fur hats, reminiscent of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Warriors, strike a rather odd chord against the backdrop of technologically advanced tank and artillery units. Yet, this incongruity is part of the charm of Warhammer 40,000, a universe where everyone can find an element that appeals to them, firmly embedded in history.
Among other factions, one can find the Tallarn Desert Raiders, who survived a virus bomb bombardment and yet resemble Bedouins, and the Mordian Iron Guard, who fight in modern ceremonial uniforms reminiscent of the USA Marine Corps. These are ordinary humans, but their courage and resilience are anything but ordinary. They stand against the terrifying warriors in power armor, bearing the signs of ruinous powers, who can easily cut down entire companies.
However, even the bravest can falter in the face of such monstrous foes. This is where the Commissariat comes in. Each Commissar is a well-trained officer from the Schola Progenium, tasked with ensuring discipline and the fulfilment of duty to the Emperor at any cost. They stand outside the Imperial command hierarchy and can punish both a private and a colonel with equal ease.
The image of the Imperial Commissar, a stern warrior in a black coat and peaked cap, has become one of the symbols of the Warhammer Universe, on par with the Space Marines. Anyone who has encountered Warhammer, even once, can unmistakably identify this figure.
Until the next time, remember, in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.
