The Death Korps of Krieg – Part 1

In the grim darkness of the far future, a planet trembles on the brink of annihilation. Welcome back to our multi-part series where we dive into the tumultuous history and conflict that shapes the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Today, we traverse the turbulent times of the Rebellion on the world of Callist Reus.

It was not even a year since the rebellion had erupted on Callist Reus. The local insurgents, although desperate, proved to be no match for the well-trained and well-equipped forces of the Imperial Guard. Their lack of training and equipment gradually led them to their inevitable defeat. But the war was far from over.

The real challenge lay in the fortress city of Caran. A city so well defended that even the lowliest of peasants could hold the line. Its defenders were no ordinary men; they were hardened warriors, survivors of numerous battles. Mixed amongst them were the elite soldiers of the KH and Garrison, who had yet to taste the bitterness of combat. Their massive walls and defensive gun batteries stood ready, a warning to those who dared to attack the city.

However, the Imperium would not be the Imperium if it did not have the audacity to face down any challenge. The regiments of the Imperial Guard tightened their grip around the fortress. The fields and hills surrounding the fortress were gradually covered with a web of trenches, drawing closer to Caran each day, despite the return fire from the fortress’s formidable defenses.

Idle on the sidelines, we find Alexander’s crew, an armored unit from the 85th Armored Company, the Storm Guard. Leaning against their tank, the Storm Lance, they watched their comrades laboring in the distance, sipping mugs of recaf. As they watched, a squad of infantry in gray greatcoats and characteristic helmets and gas masks marched past them.

“They look strange,” remarked the tank’s gunner. Captain Allan Stone, the tank commander, replied, “They’re soldiers of the Death Corps. We all seem strange to some regiments, and our planet suffered too.”

A civil war on Callist Reus had caused the planet to plunge into chaos. Rumor has it that Callist Reus was once a prosperous hive world, a bustling industrial and commercial hub teeming with billions of inhabitants. But now, the planet lay in ruins, its once magnificent cities reduced to rubble, drifting clouds of poisonous gases enveloping the wreckage.

The downfall of Callist Reus was not a sudden event, far from it. The Council of Autocrats, an oligarchic assembly of idle nobility, ruled the planet. As years passed, they grew more paranoid and decadent, fearing an overthrow. This fear led them to strengthen their power, creating private armies and fortifying their domains.

In their paranoia, they grew resentful of the administratum’s influence on their planet and the enormous tithes levied by the Departmento Munitorum. This resentment culminated in the decree of planetary martial law and a declaration of independence from the Imperium by the Supreme Autocrat, the leader of the largest hive of Callist Reus.

The rebellion split the planet into two factions – the heretical rebels and private armies on one side, the loyalists on the other. The hive city of Ferrograd, commanded by the infamous Colonel Uron of the 83rd Cre Regiment of the Imperial Guard, became a refuge for the surviving loyalists. Despite their dire situation, they held their ground against the millions of rebel forces.

As the first shots of rebellion echoed, Uron took control of Ferrograd, eliminating the vacillating rulers. However, the rebellion had taken a toll on the hive’s supply lines, and Ferrograd soon found itself cut off from the rest of Callist Reus.

To reclaim Callist Reus, the loyalists would need to launch a full-scale invasion. Uron immediately informed the segmentum command of the situation. However, he received a chilling response. The Imperial Navy, at the scale required to retake Callist Reus, was not available. The fate of Callist Reus hung in the balance.

Join us next time as we continue our exploration of the Warhammer 40,000 universe and the fate of the besieged world of Callist Reus.
