The Origins of Chaos – Part 2

In the expansive universe of Warhammer 40,000, the Chaos Gods are entities of immense power and influence. These deities, born out of raw emotions and the tumultuous nature of the universe itself, command vast legions of followers and shape the fates of countless worlds. In the first installment of this multi-part series, we delve into the lore of Khorne, the Blood God, and the oldest and most formidable of these Chaos Gods.

The Birth of Khorne

Legend has it that the earliest fragments of energy, the precursors to Khorne, entered the warp during the Old Ones’ war with the Necrons. However, it wasn’t until the fiery wars of Terra’s Bronze Age that this god of rage and destruction truly awakened. Every act of violence, whether committed by his followers or not, strengthened Khorne’s influence and power.

The God of Blood and Rage

Khorne, derived from the dark language word ‘carth’ meaning ‘Lord of Blood’ or ‘Lord of Rage’, values martial prowess and honor above all else. He despises weakness, considering the weak unworthy of his rage. Interestingly, this disdain for the weak does not translate into mercy. On the contrary, Khorne’s followers are often found contradicting this theory through their violent actions.

The Enemy of Magic

Despite being a god of a realm intertwined with magic, Khorne loathes the arcane and those who wield it. This hatred extends particularly towards Tzeentch, the god associated with magic. His greatest enemy, however, is Slaanesh, whose aspects of pleasure and excess are diametrically opposed to Khorne’s values of honor and martial prowess.

The Battlefield: Khorne’s Temple

Unlike other deities, Khorne does not require his followers to build temples in his honor. He is glorified directly on the battlefield, the foundation of the entire Khorne cult being the blood spilled in honorable combat. It is said that if any of his followers go a single day without killing, Khorne’s displeasure is imminent.
