Ahriman – Chosen Champion of Tzeentch – Part 1

Welcome back, fellow enthusiasts of the grim-dark universe of Warhammer 40,000. We continue our journey through the labyrinth of lore to understand the complex and layered world of our beloved tabletop game. Today, we’ll delve into the enigmatic and riveting tale of “Ahriman: The Chief Librarian of the Thousand Sons.”

Let’s embark on this journey with a profound thought, a mantra of the 41st millennium: “Knowledge is power, but power without purpose is nothing.” This statement rings true even for the beings capable of reshaping existence itself, including our protagonist today, Ahriman. He is not just the Chief Librarian of the Thousand Sons, but also the Archmage of the Corvidae, the Overcoming Son, and arguably, the greatest sorcerer of the Legion. Banished and destined to wander the Eye of Terror and beyond in search of knowledge, Ahriman wields a power only rivaled by the highest of demons.

His terrifying power, channeled through his iconic black staff, permits him to command armies of lesser sorcerers, animated by the warp rubric, and countless slaves of Darkness. This power enables him to wage war across time and space, exacting a fearsome toll of myriad souls to quench his thirst for the forbidden knowledge that has driven him since the early days of the Legion’s curse.

Ahriman and his twin brother were among the first recruits into the 15th Legion. Born on Terra in the lands of the ancient Aeonid Empire, they possessed significant psychic power and a deep intellect. Ahriman quickly ascended the ranks during the Legion’s darkest days and after reuniting with Magnus the Red, became his most trusted disciple and assistant. Ahriman’s unwavering will, his fighting prowess, and his knack for predicting enemy actions and devising complex strategies were his greatest assets, but it was his relentless desire to win that would lead him down a dark and perilous path.

Ahriman and Orus were born to the tribes of the Aeonid Empire, who had a long-standing alliance with the Emperor of mankind, thus sparing them the horrors of nuclear war and the invasion of the Storm and Lightning Warriors. Selected for their uncorrupted genetic heritage, they were taken to a secret laboratory for genetic enhancements and rigorous training.

As they trained, their latent abilities surfaced. Ahriman could foresee events before they occurred, while Orus mastered the ability to control lightning. The brothers excelled in all areas, their progress pleasing the observing scientists. However, an unforeseen genetic defect, known as the Flesh Change, began to manifest in the Legion, setting the stage for a series of cataclysmic events.

As we unravel the enigma that is Ahriman, we find a character who embodies the struggle of power and purpose. From his humble origins to his rise as the Legion’s greatest sorcerer, his story is a testament to the mantra we began with. Knowledge is power, but power without purpose is nothing. This power, for Ahriman, is not merely his psychic abilities or his military prowess, it’s his unwavering will, his thirst for knowledge, and his desire to win at any cost.

As we continue our journey into the lore of Warhammer 40,000, we’ll explore more about Ahriman’s path and the impact of his decisions on the destiny of the Thousand Sons. Stay tuned for our next post, where we’ll delve deeper into the curse that plagued the Legion and Ahriman’s unyielding quest for knowledge and power.
