Guilliman Lives: The Return of the Avenging Son – Part 2

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. This is especially true for the indomitable Marneus Calgar, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, and his daring defense of the embattled world of Mcragge against the ravenous Tyranid Hive Fleet. In this ongoing saga, we’re going to delve into the heart of the battle, analysing the strategies and recounting the valiant stand of the Astartes against an almost insurmountable enemy.

True to his tactical acumen, Calgar, understanding the immediate threat that Mcragge faced, fortified its already formidable defenses. A dozen warships orbited the beleaguered planet, with more arriving daily from the mysterious warp. The skies were filled with colossal Ultramarine battle barges, dwarfing the civilian vessels and Imperialist destroyers. Between this formidable fleet and the planet’s powerful defense stations, Mcragge was well fortified, or so it seemed.

However, the alien threat was not to be underestimated. Tyranid bio-ships, the outriders of the Hive Fleet, descended upon the planet, overwhelming the strike cruisers. Soon, the landscape was overrun by horrific, spore-birthed bioforms, painting a nightmarish scene.

Calgar, realizing the Tyranid threat was too vast to be countered piecemeal, consolidated his ground forces into three mighty armies. The first two task forces, mostly composed of Ultramarine veterans and planetary defense forces, fortified Mcragge’s polar fortresses against the Tyranid onslaught. Meanwhile, the largest task force, led by Calgar himself, conducted rear-guard actions, slowing the Tyranid advance and eliminating Hive-mind synapse control organisms.

In a climactic battle on Cold Steel Ridge, the Ultramarines’ rear guard was devastated by the Tyranid horde. Calgar, gravely wounded, withdrew to the orbiting battle barge Octavius, refusing all but essential medical attention. From this new vantage point, he took command of the fleet, determined to save his world from certain destruction.

The main Tyranid Hive Fleet arrived at Mcragge with no reinforcements in sight, yet Calgar led his fleet in daring attacks, targeting isolated vessels as they spread out to invade Mcragge. Caught between the formidable firepower of Mcragge’s polar fortresses and Calgar’s relentless fleet, Tyranid vessels were destroyed by the score.

But the Tyranids were not so easily deterred. They unleashed thousands of spores above the vital polar fortresses. If these fortifications fell, Mcragge’s guns would fall silent, leaving the world defenseless. The fortresses were besieged, and the defenders faced a desperate fight against a seemingly endless swarm of Tyranids.

The Ultramarines led a tenacious defense, holding every wall and trench until the last possible moment before being overrun by the Tyranid swarm. For every meter the Tyranids gained, they paid a heavy price in blood. Yet the ferocity of the swarm was beyond belief. At the northern polar fortress, they overran the walls, using the steaming piles of their own dead for cover.

Even as they faced overwhelming odds, the Ultramarines, ever stoic, never despaired. Their unyielding spirit could be seen as Calgar pursued the Tyranid fleet towards the ringed world of Cersei, at the edge of the Mcragge system. Finally, the timely arrival of the Armada Imperialis Battle Fleet Tempestus sealed the Tyranids’ fate. Caught between two fleets, the Tyranids were overmatched, but victory didn’t come without sacrifice.

The battleship Dominus Astra, in one final, heroic act, charged into the heart of the hive fleet. It detonated its warp drive, creating a warp vortex that dragged both it and the entire Tyranid Hive Fleet to oblivion. With the bulk of the hive fleet destroyed, Calgar’s surviving starships returned to Mcragge, to try and save the remaining garrisons.

The saga of Mcragge’s defense is far from over. The survivors of the Ultramarines’ first company are believed to be fighting among the defense laser silos of the northern polar fortress. Their struggle continues, their bravery unwavering in the face of an unrelenting enemy.
