Horus Heresy: Aftermath for the Space Marine Legions – Part 4

Title: Warhammer 40,000: Unveiling the Dark Secrets of Hypno-Indoctrination and Instant Indoctrination

The grim, blood-soaked universe of Warhammer 40,000 is known for the inscrutable processes that birth its warriors. In the shifting tides of the Great Crusade, legions evolved their methods of recruitment through methods like hypno-indoctrination and instant indoctrination. Let’s delve into the details of these dark procedures, and the impact they had on the very fabric of the legions.

Hypno-indoctrination, a method that could be considered one of the most controversial, involved augmenting the cognitive capabilities of recruits. This was achieved by filling cognitive gaps with traits deemed acceptable through deepened indoctrination programs. It was a method favored by loyalist forces, whose records indicate high usage of hypno-indoctrination in the creation of inductees. However, not all legions subscribed to this belief. Some, like the World Eaters and several strike units of the Blood Angels, preferred using poorly equipped and trained inductees as living shields. For these legions, survival was the highest form of respect, with fallen legionaries earning their place through the brutal school of conflict.

Yet, the galaxy of Warhammer 40,000 is not one for stagnation. The process of instant indoctrination was developed as a deviation from the traditional hypno-indoctrination. This method involved the direct transfer of memories from the recently deceased, shaping the consciousness of the living. While some saw this process as a beneficial method of hastening recruitment, it was also viewed as a form of desecration. The act of stealing the thoughts of the dead to form the minds of the living was eerily reminiscent of necromancy or death divination.

The most notorious application of instant indoctrination was by the World Eaters. Investigations of the 12th Legion’s training bases revealed blood-drenched gladiatorial pits. Here, after their deaths, the memories of fallen assassins were collected, aggregated and implanted into the majority of inductees. These memories of savagery and death became methodical manuals for new recruits. Their rational thinking was displaced by relentless fury, their humanity extinguished, and their bloodlust elevated to an absolute.

However, the World Eaters were not the only adherents of such technology. The Word Bearers, known for their mystical fanaticism, and the Iron Warriors, with their mindless obedience, also employed instant indoctrination. Even the Dark Angels, though their application was minor in comparison, showed signs of using this process.

Legions faced with the escalating cost of war began to abandon the protective mechanisms traditionally applied during the implantation of recruits. The need for swift production of warriors led to the application of rapid implantation methods, sacrificing safety for speed. Legions in more stable regions of the galaxy, such as Garrison Notaria Ultramar or the subordinate regions of the Dark Imperium of the Warm, served as ideal bases for these deviations.

In the end, instant indoctrination proved to be a powerful tool, despite its limitations. It shaped warriors with a narrow outlook and volatile temperaments, but for those who saw inductees as nothing more than disposable tools, these shortcomings were of little consequence. The universe of Warhammer 40,000 is a place of unspeakable horrors and brutal necessities, and the methods of hypno-indoctrination and instant indoctrination are a testament to this grim reality.
