Mortarion – From Hero to Monster – Part 2

Title: The Dark Maturation of Mortarion: A Primarch’s Tale on Barbarus

In the grim, toxic world of Barbarus, a young Primarch named Mortarion was raised within the confines of stone fortresses and iron fences. His adoptive father, Nar, a being devoid of any paternal sentiments, relocated his dwelling to a lethal peak, where the pervasive poisonous fog could even kill a Primarch. There, Mortarion’s youth was spent amidst the suffocating air of death and the relentless wars waged by armies of golems, crafted from the dead.

Yet, Mortarion was not just another creation of this harsh world, he was a son of the Emperor. This lineage endowed him with superhuman resistance to poison and incredible physical endurance. Even in this joyless reality, his true nature began to manifest, and from an early age, he started to question his adoptive father about the fragile beings inhabiting the lowlands.

This curiosity, fuelled by the Emperor’s instilled role of Humanity’s Defender in his sons, drew Mortarion towards these humans. Despite Nar’s attempts to keep him away from human settlements, Mortarion felt an irresistible pull towards them. One day, he escaped his gloomy fortress, evading Nar’s wrath and making his way down to the lowlands.

The clean air of the lowlands, the scent of cooking food and freshly harvested crops, and the sound of genuine human laughter were foreign to Mortarion. But it was amidst these ordinary humans that Mortarion truly found his kin. The realization that these eternal victims of the overlords were his own people ignited a fury in him. The young Primarch resolved to bring justice to this monstrous world.

However, blending in with the mortal inhabitants of Barbarus wasn’t easy for Mortarion. His towering height and pale features made him a figure of suspicion and fear. Yet, he worked hard, proving his good intentions and usefulness by helping the villagers with their harvest.

His moment of acceptance came when he defended the village from an attack by the dead, dispatched by an overlord from the mountain. Mortarion, armed with nothing but a harvest scythe, battled the monsters. When the overlord retreated, believing Mortarion couldn’t pursue him due to the poisonous fog, Mortarion proved him wrong. He chased down and killed the overlord, proving that he was no mere mortal.

His victory over the overlord cleared any lingering doubts among the villagers, and he was accepted as one of their own. Mortarion began realizing his dream of protecting the people of Barbarus. He started training the villagers in the art of war, and soon other settlements joined his cause.

Mortarion travelled from village to village, helping people strengthen their fortifications. He personally trained the most resilient men, forming them into combat squads. Using his knowledge of the toxic environment, he worked with the smiths and craftsmen to create masks for air filtration and armour that could withstand the poisonous fog.

As Mortarion watched his people organize and grow stronger, he took pride in his protective role. In every battle against the monsters, he and his companions extracted their courage, resilience, and the spirit of defiance, making each victory a testament of their collective will to survive. This tale of Mortarion’s maturation and his quest for justice on Barbarus continues, and his legacy echoes through the annals of Warhammer 40,000 lore.
