Raven Guard and Their Dark Legacy – Part 8

Title: “The Watchful: A Chronicle of the Fifth Company of the Ravenguard”

In the fifth year of the Indomitus Crusade, a company of warriors stood vigil, their eyes piercing through the shadowy veil of the battlefield. The company known as the Fifth Company of the Ravenguard, or simply the ‘Watchful’, had taken upon themselves the heavy mantle of ceaseless vigilance, a legacy borne from their revered Primarch.

The Watchful believed in the doctrine of ambush and stealth, but not without the underpinning of unyielding vigilance. They were the unseen eyes that knew every weakness of their enemy, every chink in their armor. The only flaws that escaped their gaze were their own – a reflection of their Primarch, Korax, who often undertook the duty of scouting himself to better understand the impending operation.

Following the second founding, vigilant reconnaissance became the guiding principle of the Watchful. From remote observation posts, these warriors, with their sharp eyesight, watched over the battlefield. Not a single detail escaped their attention. This keen observation made them a formidable force, their attacks so precise that to the untrained eye, it seemed as if they possessed the gift of foresight. However, the truth was much more mundane. Through prolonged study of the enemy, they learned their weaknesses, their habits, allowing them to predict movements and evasive actions with ease.

But, the path of ceaseless vigilance came with a price. The Watchful often found themselves observing but not acting – waiting for that perfect moment to strike, which may never come. This obsessive search for answers was a mirror to their Primarch’s destructive trait. The presence of battle brothers from the third and fourth companies, who brought different relationships to the Triune path, served as a counterbalance to the Watchful during their most challenging moments.

The Watchful not only bore the responsibility of guarding the Raven Spire but also had the honor of performing the ancient ritual duty of watching for the possible return of Korax. This duty, performed by a single battle brother from the Fifth Company, has lasted 10,000 years without response. Yet, its purpose transcends tangible need or obedient tradition. It stands as a beacon of hope, a flame shielded from the galaxy’s suffocating despair by one unwavering guardian.

On to the next chapter of the tale, The Darkened Blades: The Sixth Company of the Ravenguard. The Darkened Blades carry the heavy burden of continuing the Primarch’s fight against tyranny, to dismantle the grand plans of desperate demagogues and false prophets who would enslave humanity. Of all the companies in the chapter, the sixth is typically the most itinerant, operating far beyond the bright glow of the Astronomican. Stay tuned for more on their epic journey to return enslaved worlds to the Imperial fold.
