Title: Unmasking the Mysterious Zenos: Blackstone Fortresses and The Gothic War.
As we continue our journey through the multi-dimensional world of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, we delve into the fascinating realm of the Blackstone fortresses. These behemothic marvels, originally crafted by the enigmatic alien race of Zenos, were commandeered by the Imperium and converted into colossal orbital bases for the mighty Battle Fleet Gothic.
The first time the fortresses fell into the clutches of Abon’s malevolent forces marked a turning point in the war. Suddenly, the advanced technology that once fortified the Imperium was at the foe’s disposal. Abon’s Fleet boasted a terrifying new addition: the Planet Killer. Aptly named, this monstrous weapon left nothing but destruction in its wake. The Cardinal world of Savvan bore the brunt of its wrath. Jeremiah Saigan, Savvan’s orbital defense commander, recounted the horrific spectacle of the planet’s annihilation – skies set aflame, continents wrenched apart, and the planet shattering into oblivion. In one agonizing hour, 14 million lives were extinguished, casting a pall over the Imperial morale.
As word of the Planet Killer’s destructive capabilities spread, panic ensued. Many worlds were hastily evacuated, a desperate race against time that was not always won. Further losses of Blackstone Fortresses at Baga and FIS 2 shed light on the true power of these ancient constructs. Imperial records indicate that a massive energy beam from the Blackstone Fortress ravaged FIS 2, stripping it of its atmosphere and turning its surface into a barren wasteland.
The Imperium was waging a tireless battle across the Gothic sector, from the Hammerhead deeps to the Cyclops cluster, in a bid to halt the Chaos War Fleet’s Black Crusade. The tide seemed to turn in the 151st year of the 41st Millennium. Lord High Admiral Cornelius Ravensburg, commanding Battle Fleet Gothic, launched a counteroffensive, resulting in the Battle of Gethsemane. Here, a significant Chaos War Fleet was obliterated.
Interestingly, Craft World Eldery vessels were also involved in this battle. While Imperial historians often downplay their role, there’s compelling evidence that suggests the Eldery’s involvement in the fight against Chaos was noteworthy during the latter stages of the Gothic War. Their use of web gates was a game-changer.
As the warp storms isolating the Gothic sector began to abate, Ravensburg’s battered Battle Fleet Gothic received reinforcements from neighboring sectors. But Abdon remained a formidable adversary. He aimed the full power of the captured Blackstone fortresses at the star of Tantis, the mustering point for new Imperial Starships entering the Gothic sector. In a catastrophic event, the Blackstone fortresses destabilized the Tantis star, causing it to go nova and annihilating everything within the star system.
The final major battle of the Gothic War played out at Shindel Gist, home to the Imperial Blackstone 5. A trap set by Ravensburg and the Assani resulted in a victory over Abdon’s War Fleet, but not without cost. In a spiteful act, Abdon tried to destroy the star, but the valiant sacrifice of Captain Abdar on the Flame of Purity thwarted this attempt.
The end of the 41st Millennium saw Abdon defeated but not contained; he escaped into the Eye of Terror with two captured Blackstone fortresses. As the 13th Black Crusade loomed on the horizon, the Imperium was left to grapple with an unsettling truth: Abdon’s next assault was imminent, and the potential power of the Blackstone fortresses was an unpredictable and terrifying factor.
Stay tuned for our next installment, where we will uncover more about the impending 13th Black Crusade and the role of the ominous drifting vessels emerging from the warp. Until then, keep your bolters ready and your faith in the Emperor strong.
