The Death Korps of Krieg – Part 5

Welcome to another thrilling installment of our multi-part series diving into the gritty, grimdark world of Warhammer 40,000. Today, we’re focused on the unsung heroes, the backbone of the Death Korps of Krieg regiments, the Quartermasters, Grenadiers, Engineers and the Death Riders.

Let’s start with the Quartermasters, the stoic figures responsible for logistics, recordkeeping, and critical tactical observations. Amid the chaos of battle, they’re the ones meticulously marking enemy positions and firing points, relaying this vital data to the officers orchestrating the fight. The Quartermasters stand as embodiments of the Cult of Sacrifice, often found performing rites over the sick and fatally wounded soldiers. Among the Krieg Guardsmen, the death mask of the Quartermaster is a sight of comfort, believed to be the last thing a dying soldier should see.

In the Death Korps, there are no specialized companies as such, making each regiment a mix of different units like Grenadiers, Engineers, and Death Riders. Grenadiers, the equivalent of Storm Troopers, are selected from the ranks of ordinary infantrymen. They are not promoted but considered to hold a higher position in the command hierarchy. A grim reality of being a Grenadier is their high casualty rate, with statistics showing that eight out of 10 perish. Their skull masks become a haunting symbol of soldiers who have lived too long, soldiers who must now prove their exceptionalism or find redemption in death for the sins of their people.

Engineers are the masters of underground trench warfare, a cross between Storm Troopers and technical specialists. They are experienced sappers and miners who can quickly dig deep tunnels behind enemy lines, undermining fire positions or ensuring covert movement of sabotage groups. They are also among the few in the regiment trained to use chemical weapons, utilizing gas grenades to envelop entrenched enemies in clouds of poisonous gas.

Then there are the Death Riders, perhaps the most unique unit in the Death Korps. Created during the brutal civil war on Krieg, they were a necessary innovation when machinery, spare parts, fuel supplies became scarce, and the planet’s surface was littered with debris and trenches. Geno-technicians developed a new breed of horse, genetically enhanced to be larger, stronger, and more enduring than ordinary horses, and decidedly more aggressive. The Death Riders, like their steeds, are equipped with respiratory systems and armor to increase their survivability. Even after Krieg returned under the gaze of the Emperor and received various technologies, fuel, and ammunition, they did not abandon the Death Riders.

These Death Riders, like their fellow infantrymen, embody the harsh and fatalistic ethos of the Death Korps. They stand ready, always willing to sacrifice their lives for the Imperium. And that, dear readers, is a glimpse into the lives and duties of the Quartermasters, Grenadiers, Engineers, and Death Riders of the Death Korps of Krieg. Stay tuned for the next part of our series where we’ll delve deeper into the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40,000.
