The Saga of the Daemon Princes – Part 12

Welcome back, fellow devotees of the Warhammer 40,000 lore! In our ongoing series, we shall delve into the unspeakable horrors of Chaos. Today, we shift our focus to the monstrous entity, Perer the Putrescent, a grotesque embodiment of Nurgle’s malevolent design.

The tale of Perer is one of grotesque transformation and unimaginable survival against the odds. Typically, a spawn of Chaos, after their horrifying metamorphosis, would succumb to death within hours, if not minutes. The monstrous mutations thrust upon them proving too overwhelming for their bodies to bear. However, in a whimsical twist of fate, or perhaps a deliberate act of Nurgle himself, Perer the Putrescent was spared such a fate.

This nightmarish spawn learned to endure by consuming soft tissues and biological fluids, allowing him to grow and gain unprecedented might. His maw, now akin to a cavern entrance, was adorned with rows of rotten fangs from which he could extend rope-like, elongated tongues. With every soul consumed, his body transformed. Layers of fat stretched his skin to the brink, tearing it apart, giving birth to new tentacles, clusters of spinning eyes, and foul insectoid legs from every tear.

The abomination grew into a massive, writhing monster, the size of a cargo shuttle, fueled by the entropic energy of the Warp and diabolical diseases. A swarm of flies began to surround it, adding another layer of protection against any potential attacks. Nurgle was said to be delighted with the abomination's rampages, but Mortarion, the Primarch of the Death Guard, was less than pleased with the chaos the creature had wrought upon his Legion.

Mortarion, unable to destroy the beast cherished by his Patron God, and unwilling to endure its relentless rampages, banished the abomination to the dank wilderness of a plagued planet. Rumor has it that the Abomination now prowls the dead marshes of this forsaken planet, bloated like a living mountain, posing a threat to any unfortunate soul who ventures into its hunting grounds.

In the second edition of the game, this creature was considered both a spawn of Chaos and a prince of Demons, a status reflected in its rules. Despite changes in later editions, considering the peculiar nature of Perer, he could still be counted among the demon princes.

Now, let's shift our focus to another fascinating character, the Demon Prince known as The Bearer, previously Joseph Malon, a common sailor of the Imperial Navy. Infamous for his unreliability and stubbornness, Malon was hailed as the laziest man across the entire fleet. For 50 years, he managed to avoid his duties, hiding in the underbellies of void ships, until fate intervened.

During a fateful voyage, a warp breach occurred, and Malon contracted an infection after battling Nurgle's demons. This disease caused no weakness or decay, but unbeknownst to him, he became a silent carrier, infecting thousands with a dreadful plague.

Emissaries of the Lord of Decay eventually found Joseph. They told him he had unknowingly been serving Nurgle, spreading decay among his comrades. Nurgle offered him eternal respite, far from the hardships of fleet life, in exchange for continuing to spread the contagion. With idle curiosity, Malon agreed and thus began his servitude to the Lord of Decay.

Centuries later, Joseph, now a demon prince, lives among the tumultuous worlds in the Maelstrom of the Void dancer, serving his master with joyous abandon. Though he retains his human form, inside, he's a cauldron of deadly viruses. However, in a twist of irony, Joseph, despite his demonic transformation, has remained as lazy as ever. He could have become one of the greatest servants of the Lord of Decay, if only he had exerted a sliver of effort.
