Perer the Putrescent and The Bearer: Champions of Nurgle
Welcome back, devotees of Warhammer 40,000 lore! In our continuing series on the unspeakable horrors of Chaos, today we turn our attention to two monstrous entities who exemplify the paradoxical nature of Nurgle’s malevolent design: Perer the Putrescent and The Bearer.
Perer the Putrescent: The Ever-Growing Abomination
Perer’s tale is one of grotesque transformation and survival against all odds. Typically, Chaos spawn succumb to their horrifying mutations within hours, their bodies unable to bear the monstrous changes. Yet, Perer’s fate was different—a twist of fate, or perhaps the deliberate will of Nurgle himself.
Perer endured by consuming soft tissues and biological fluids, growing stronger and more horrifying with each meal. His maw, vast as a cavern, bristled with rows of decayed fangs and extended rope-like tongues to ensnare his prey. Every soul he consumed further warped his form, tearing his skin to reveal tentacles, spinning clusters of eyes, and insectoid legs.
Fueled by the entropic energies of the Warp and diabolical diseases, Perer grew to the size of a cargo shuttle, surrounded by a swarm of flies that shielded him from attacks. Nurgle delighted in his rampages, but Mortarion, Primarch of the Death Guard, was far less pleased.
Unable to destroy a creature cherished by Nurgle, Mortarion banished Perer to the plagued wilderness of a forsaken planet. There, the abomination prowls the dead marshes, a living mountain of disease and death, ready to strike at any soul foolish enough to enter its hunting grounds.
In earlier editions of the game, Perer was classified as both a Chaos Spawn and a Demon Prince, reflecting his unique nature. Though later editions shifted his classification, Perer remains a grotesque testament to Nurgle’s twisted creativity.
The Bearer: Nurgle’s Lazy Servant
In contrast to Perer’s monstrous ambition, The Bearer, formerly Joseph Malon, tells a tale of ironic transformation. A common sailor of the Imperial Navy, Malon was infamous for his laziness, avoiding duties for decades by hiding in the underbellies of void ships.
During one fateful voyage, a Warp breach exposed Malon to Nurgle’s influence. Though he showed no signs of decay, he became a silent carrier of a deadly plague, unknowingly infecting thousands. When emissaries of Nurgle revealed his unintentional service to the Lord of Decay, they offered him eternal respite in exchange for continuing to spread the contagion. Out of idle curiosity, Malon agreed.
Centuries later, Malon, now a Demon Prince, serves Nurgle in the Maelstrom of the Void Dancer. Though he retains a human-like form, he is a walking cauldron of deadly viruses. His mere presence spreads death and decay, making him one of Nurgle’s most effective carriers.
Yet, in a darkly ironic twist, Malon remains as lazy as ever. Despite his potential to become one of Nurgle’s greatest champions, his lack of effort limits his influence, a fact that amuses and frustrates his fellow servants of Chaos in equal measure.
The Paradox of Nurgle’s Champions
Perer the Putrescent and The Bearer highlight the paradoxical duality of Nurgle’s influence. Perer’s grotesque ambition and Malon’s ironic lethargy represent the diverse paths to immortality under the Plague God. Both serve as reminders of Chaos’s capricious nature, where even eternal life comes with unexpected twists.
