Blood Angels : Blood for the Golden God – Part 2

It’s time to delve into the crimson-soaked lore of the Warhammer 40,000 universe once again, this time focusing on the zealous Blood Angels, the ninth Legion of the Adeptus Astartes. This is another chapter in our multi-part series, so buckle up as we head straight into the heart of the storm.

Whether aboard the formidable Thunderhawk, the deadly Storm Raven gunship, or in the troop bay of the robust Rhino Razorback or the devastating Land Raider, the Blood Angels are a force to be reckoned with. Their mastery of close quarters combat is unparalleled, a proficiency born from the gene-seed of the legendary Sanguinius, their Primarch. This divine lineage not only grants them an unusually extended lifespan, even by Space Marine standards, but also allows them countless battles and endless solar hours to sharpen their fighting skills to the point of perfection.

Yet, it’s not just tactical necessity or battlefield doctrine that urges these angelic warriors into brutal melee. A darker, more visceral force is at play. The Blood Angels’ genetic reliance on blood, and the need to cleanse it, compels them into a bloodthirsty frenzy. This insatiable lust for bloodshed, known as the Red Thirst, can transform their ordinarily noble demeanor into a twisted rage-fueled savagery. For some, the Red Thirst is but a prelude to the ultimate expression of their genetic flaw – the Black Rage. This is a state of all-consuming fury, a permanent madness that the Blood Angels and their successor chapters, collectively known as the Sanguinary Brotherhood, uniquely bear.

The journey of a Blood Angel is one rarely understood by outsiders. They possess a near-supernatural, saintly countenance, their features pure and handsome, a transformation all the more remarkable considering their origins. They are recruited from the radiation-poisoned tribesmen of Baal, whose harsh lives leave them stunted and plagued with carcinoma and lesions. The dramatic metamorphosis into saintly Neophytes is made possible by arcane rituals involving blood.

However, with each battle, the genetic flaw’s influence grows stronger, and the urge to spill hot, steaming blood intensifies. The Blood Angels are thus driven to spend longer periods purging their own blood within the crimson embrace of their transfusion caskets. This ritualistic blood cleansing can take centuries and eventually, the Blood Angel may feel the stirrings of the Black Rage, not just in the heat of battle, but even before it. Those who cannot resist are forced to join the chapter’s infamous Death Company.

The Blood Angels fought against the destiny inscribed in their genes, dared to defy the role the Emperor had chosen for them, and believed they could overcome the darkness shadowing them. They transformed the worst of mankind into something radiant and true, rising above their origins to stand as the fledgling Imperium’s guardian angels. However, within their triumphs lay the seeds of their downfall, nurtured by the envy of the fallen Warmaster Horus, leading to the catastrophic events of the Horus Heresy.

The ninth Legion’s resilience ensured they did not succumb to despair or darkness, but rose again and again. What magnificent bloom could have emerged from their bloody origins were it not for the dark fate cast upon them by treachery and genetics? That unrealized future is yet another casualty of Horus’s Civil War, leaving the Blood Angels to endure the slow decay of their noble lineage with the stubborn pride that defines them.

In the annals of the Unification Wars, many noble legends recount the Emperor’s newborn Space Marine Legions’ victories. Yet, the ninth Legion’s role remains shrouded in mystery. While the first companies of other legions fought in Albia, Indusia, and Franc, the ninth Legion was absent, assigned a role both vital and unsightly. They served the Emperor as an inferno serves a general on the battlefield, not to conquer, but to ravage, a weapon that could not be directed or controlled, only endured. Their early battles were fought as mere vanguards to the Thunder Warriors, but their indomitable spirit and unyielding resolve were already making their mark on the annals of Warhammer 40,000 lore.

Join us next time as we continue this epic journey through the harrowing and heroic saga of the Blood Angels.
