In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war – and the Warhammer 40,000 universe is a testament to that. Part of a multi-part series, today’s post will plunge into the shadowed territories of the Eye of Terror, the worlds inhabited by the notorious Traitor Legions, and the chilling tales that surface from those who dare venture into these forbidden zones.
Our tale begins with the enigmatic War Smiths, controllers of the great companies, residing in the most formidable fortress on the planet, belonging to none other than the infamous Perturabo. The planet Medard, a colossal Fortress world, is a nightmarish vision of slave pits and towering columns piercing the heavens. Its bleak landscape is bathed in the haunting light of a black sun, its dark rays pouring from a snow-white sky. This chilling scene comes courtesy of the ill-fated expedition by Inquisitor Maul into the Eye of Terror in the 38th Millennium. His return was marked by madness, his sanity shattered, but his blood-smeared ship bore witness to his journey with writings recounting the horrors he had seen.
Yet, the twisted tales of the Traitor Legions do not end here. The Night Lords and the Alpha Legion, shrouded in mystery even before the Horus Heresy, continue to confound those who seek them. The Alpha Legion, in particular, are rumored to control an intricate network of bases spanning across the Eye of Terror and even within Imperial space.
The World Eaters, on the other hand, appear to have been scattered across the Eye of Terror, with no centralized command and no known home world.
But not all Traitor Legions are as elusive. The Word Bearers, the Thousand Sons, the Death Guard, and the Sons of Horus have all made their homes known.
The Word Bearers have claimed the planet Currus. With a horizon ablaze with blood and fire, Currus is a world overrun with temples, each one a testament to the ruinous powers. The Basilica of the Word, a colossal fortress of sharp spires and gruesome sacrifices, is the nerve center of this chaotic world. Lorgar, the Primarch of the Word Bearers, resides within the Templum Inficio, hidden from even his sons, sustained by the will of the Chaos forces.
The Thousand Sons Legion found refuge on Sortiarius, also known as the Planet of the Sorcerers, a gift from the Chaos God Tzeentch to their Primarch, Magnus. This hostile world, rocked by tectonic shifts and volcanic eruptions, is home to the city of Tizca, transported by Magnus through the warp as it burned under the Space Wolves’ assault. The city now stands as a cruel parody of its former glory, surrounded by the agonized cries of lost souls doomed to eternally whirl in the planet’s rings.
Our exploration into the Eye of Terror and its terrifying inhabitants will continue in the next installment. Until then, remember: in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.
