History of Ciaphas Cain – Part 2

Title: Cain’s Chronicles: Tales from the 597th Valhallan Regiment

Greetings, fellow lore enthusiasts! Today, we journey into the icy world of Val Hala, home to the indomitable Imperial Guard regiments and the setting for many of Commissar Ciaphas Cain’s legendary exploits.

Throughout his service, Cain’s discipline was exemplary, a testament to his rigorous training in all but athletics and combat. His commitment to the code of conduct was so unwavering that it led some to speculate that he was never apprehended simply because he never misstepped.

Our hero’s journey primarily unfolds within the regiments of the frigid Val Hala, where he embraced many local customs, save for their love for the cold and their propensity for bone-chilling showers. Cain’s trusted sidekick, Jurgen, a Valhallan guardsman and a psychic blank, served loyally at his side for many years.

Cain cut his teeth in the Valhallan 12th Field Artillery, beginning as a commissar attached to the command battery, only to assume more responsibilities across the entire regiment. His combat debut was a baptism by fire on the world of Desola, where the regiment held off Orcs, then a Tyranid Hive Fleet, before an Imperial Fleet evacuated them.

Post-Desola, Cain and his regiment were dispatched to Kefia, a planet serving a tranquil respite from combat. However, tranquility was occasionally disrupted, like when they helped local law enforcement root out a Genestealer infestation in the sector. Despite the danger, this battle paled in comparison to their previous engagements.

On Perlia, a space battle left Cain and Jurgen isolated on the planet’s surface, their escape pod crash-landed behind Orc lines. It was Cain who rallied the survivors, embarking on the ‘Liberator’s March,’ cutting through the xeno battle lines back to the Imperial front. His slaying of an Orc Warlord sparked the final rout of the disoriented and fragmented greenskin horde.

Yet, the universe of Warhammer 40,000 is a dangerous place, and nowhere was this more evident than on Sorenberg. Cain and a trio of Guardsmen narrowly escaped the machinations of a Chaos sorcerer, obliterating enemy positions with a precision artillery strike.

Cain’s reputation as a gambler with fate led to a cruel jest. Even within the relative safety of the Commissariat Command, perilous missions became his lot. Ventures into Interor Prime, a Necron tomb world, Veridia and Veridia Secundus, purging space hulks, confrontations against the Craftworld Eldar, and more. Always surviving by the skin of his teeth, always the last hero standing against the tide of darkness.

Eventually, Cain requested reassignment back to a frontline unit, considering it ironically safer. His later years were spent with the 597th Valhallan Regiment, where he forged a unique camaraderie with the soldiers, particularly the senior officers.

Cain’s leadership was instrumental in merging the all-male 296th Valhallan Regiment and the all-female 301st Valhallan Regiment, both initially antagonistic towards each other. The spark that ignited the integration was a rebellion in the mess hall. Cain appealed to the Administratum for the regiments to be rechristened as the 597th Valhallan Regiment. His insistence on integrating squads from both regiments and recognizing notable conduct swiftly transformed the units into a unified and disciplined force.

Cain’s tales continue to inspire, from his time in the 597th Valhallan Regiment to his heroic role during the incident on Grax, where he was awarded the Order of Merit of Gravx Second Class for preventing the Tau Empire’s annexation.

This saga of blood, valor, and endurance is a testament to the unyielding spirit of the Imperium’s endless war. Stay tuned for more tales from the annals of Commissar Cain and the 597th Valhallan Regiment.
