Immortal Fates: The Path of the Perpetuals – Part 4

In the grim darkness of the far future, there are characters who have traversed the span of time and witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations, the birth and death of stars, and epic battles that shaped the universe. Damon Pranis, also known as the Perpetual, is one such character in the Warhammer 40,000 lore. A being of innumerable lives and countless millennia, Pranis is a figure shrouded in mystery and intrigue.

Let’s delve into the labyrinthine tale of this enigmatic character, shall we?

Damon Pranis, although not his original name as he’d long forgotten it, wasn’t much of a fan of humanity. Unlike his fellow Perpetual, John Grammaticus, Pranis pledged his loyalty not to mankind but to the Cabal – a clandestine xenos organization primarily comprised of Eldar.

In the aftermath of the Battle of Io, Pranis was recruited to the Cabal’s cause, becoming a notorious assassin throughout the history of the galaxy. His targets? Those the Cabal deemed good-hearted but whose fates were sealed by the necessities of the greater good. From a man in Memphis to a brother in the City of Angels, from Hollard in the Glass Temple of Man on Kind in the 19th Millennium to Marah Hassan on the Spire Terrace in the 22nd Millennium, Pranis’ mark was left on history.

One of his most significant assignments was rescuing Sirene Valanum from the Word Bearers and ushering her to the Cabal’s sanctuary. It took multiple rebirths for Sirene to eventually trust Pranis, a testament to his perseverance and dedication to his cause.

In a daring mission to assassinate the Primarch Vulcan, Pranis was severely wounded by Conrad Kurze, only surviving by using a vial containing a captured demon to banish the Primarch to the warp.

Following the events on Mcra, Pranis was assigned by the Cabal member, Slow Dha, to supervise Grammaticus at one of the Cabal’s outposts. However, the outpost was breached by Eldrad Ultran and his Word Bearer assassin, Bausa Nar. Despite a stubborn resistance, Pranis was overpowered, and his immortality was finally put to an end by a shard of fulgurite.

Enter Anania Person, another Perpetual who had lived so many lives that he’d forgotten his true age. By his reckoning during the Horus Heresy, he was about 45,000 years old. Born in the city of Nineveh around 15,000 years before our era, he is believed to be the oldest Perpetual in the galaxy, even older than the Emperor himself.

In ancient times, Person served as a warlord within the Emperor’s armies, leading sieges and battles against various chaos cults. However, disillusioned by the Emperor’s decision to preserve dark knowledge against future threats, Person turned against his lord, stabbing him with a dagger and using an Enun to destroy the tower containing the dark knowledge.

By the 31st Millennium, Anania Person was known as Pious Oll Person, a devout adherent to the teachings of the Catholic religion. After long years of service in the Imperial Army, he retired to a life of farming on the planet Cal in the Ultramar Subsector.

Thus, the tale of the Perpetuals continues, an epic saga of immortal beings navigating the tumultuous waters of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The lives of Damon Pranis and Anania Person remind us that even in a universe marred by eternal war, individuals can shape the course of history, their actions echoing through the millennia. Stay tuned for more tales from the grim darkness of the far future.
