Inquisition – The Emperor’s Left Hand – Part 4

Title: The Grim Dance of Duty: Inquisitors in Warhammer 40,000

In the grim darkness of the far future, where there is only war, the Space Marine chapters stand as the bulwark against the ceaseless tide of chaos. Amidst the cacophony of warfare, the Marines remain unyielding, their focus unswerving on their principal mission. Yet, they are not alone in their ceaseless vigil. The clandestine figures of the Inquisition, the secret arm of the Emperor’s divine will, operate deftly from the shadows.

While some of these shadowy Emissaries possess the authority to lead the military effort, most opt to operate from behind the scenes. They leave the frontlines to the Imperial forces, leveraging the expertise of these battlefield professionals for direct engagements. This strategic choice allows the Inquisitors to focus on their primary roles – investigation, oversight, and the broader strategic implications of their mission.

Each Ordo within the Inquisition, or conclave, has its own well-defined tasks. The Inquisition, as a whole, is a well-oiled machine of divine justice, and conflicts between these organizations are extremely rare. However, within the individual branches, the reality is much more intricate, even convoluted.

Disputes between Agents of the same branch are not uncommon, often ignited by differences in methodology. Some Inquisitors, for instance, argue that to defeat the enemy, one must harness their weapons – use witchcraft against demons, for instance. Others view these compromises as blasphemous, believing that victory should not come at the cost of desecrating sacred ideals.

Such disagreements, often reduced to a confrontation between radical and puritanical views, are deceptively complex. The boundaries are not absolute, but rather, relative, shifting in the murky waters of subjective perception.

Inquisitors rarely categorize themselves as radical or puritan, but are quick to label their peers. A representative of the Ordo Malleus, for instance, might brand a fellow Inquisitor a radical for subjugating a demon with forbidden knowledge. The irony lies in the fact that his fellow AO members might have already deemed him unreliable for his own dalliances with the unholy.

Within the Inquisition, truth is a conditional thing, as fluid and elusive as the shadows they operate in. There are no higher judges to appeal to, no universal code of conduct to abide by. The lines between necessary evil and excessive transgression are blurred, and each Inquisitor must navigate this treacherous terrain on their own.

Inquisitors, however, wield the power to declare any individual, organization, or planet Excommunicate Traitoris – marking them as excommunicated traitors. Those subjected to this decree are ostracized from the Imperium of Man, becoming targets for elimination by any servant of the Emperor. This power is not wielded lightly and serves as a stark reminder of the Inquisitor’s role in safeguarding the Imperium.

In this convoluted dance of duty, the Ordo Malleus, known as Demon Hunters, stand as a beacon. These Inquisitors have pledged their lives to combating the physical manifestations of Chaos, vowing to relentlessly pursue the demons that threaten the Imperium. In the grim darkness of the future, their struggle is unending, their vigil eternal.
