Mortarion – From Hero to Monster – Part 7

Title: The Grim Dance of Primarchs: The Second Battle on Prospero

In the unpredictable cosmic chessboard of Warhammer 40,000, there are times when the mightiest of pieces collide in battles of cataclysmic proportions. In this latest entry of our multi-part series, we delve into the tensely charged encounter between two Primarchs: Lupal, who dared to flirt with the tantalizing power of Chaos, and Jager ta KH, the steadfast brother who refused to dance to the discordant tune of the warp.

The stage was set on Prospero, a planet previously known for its psychic prowess, now a battleground for Primarchs. Lupal, seeking an ally in his controversial bid for power, extended an invitation to his brother, Jager ta KH. This call, however, fell on deaf ears. The latter, a stalwart defender of the Emperor, viewed his brother’s overtures with derision, laughing at the bitter irony of Lupal’s plight.

Once a vehement opponent of psychic abilities, Lupal, also known as Mortarion the Grim, had now become one with the warp, the very force he had once despised. The once reticent brother had been corrupted, a bitter pill to swallow for Jager ta KH, who had always prided himself on the incorruptibility of his kin.

The tension reached a fever pitch as Mortarion, enraged by his brother’s mockery, ignited his powerthe, sparking the second ever battle between Primarchs on Prospero. The battlefield was a maelstrom of destruction, as Keshig, the elite warriors of Jager ta KH, clashed with Mortarion’s Death Shroud Warriors. The struggle was not for the faint-hearted, as Space Marines fell one after the other, their blood painting the ground a grim reminder of their sacrifice.

In the midst of this chaos, Mortarion made his retreat, swallowed by a swirling stream of green energy and vanishing into the warp, leaving Jager ta KH victorious but with a bitter taste of victory. Mortarion’s flight marked a turning point in the battle on Prospero, inflicting a heavy blow to his pride and forcing him to reassess his strategy.

In his retreat, Mortarion launched a punitive operation, laying waste to several worlds in the prospering Empire. His actions were driven by a lingering question, a nagging thought that he sought to answer through an unlikely source: a mortal woman who was but a vessel for a warp demon.

The interrogation that followed was a grim dance between Mortarion and the demon, a desperate attempt to understand the allure of the warp. The demon’s explanation was far from satisfying, leading Mortarion to a reluctant conclusion: the warp was an unavoidable contagion, a force that had tainted everything, including his brothers.

As the curtain fell on this grim episode, Mortarion was left with a chilling prophecy from the demon: his fate was intertwined with the warp, engraved on its rusted throne, a fate he could not escape, no matter how fiercely he resisted. This encounter served as a stark reminder of the inescapable influence of the warp, a force that sways the mightiest and the humblest alike, forever altering the cosmic chessboard of Warhammer 40,000.

In our next entry, we delve deeper into the aftermath of the second battle on Prospero, exploring the rippling effects of this encounter on the galaxy. Stay tuned, fellow Warhammer enthusiasts, as we continue our journey through the lore of this rich universe.
