Shortly About Daemon Engines – Part 2

The Darkly Majestic Heldrake: A Nightmare in Flight

In the grim darkness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, few sights are as simultaneously awe-inspiring and spine-chilling as the Heldrake – once noble fighter aircraft piloted by Space Marine Tech Marines, now transformed into monstrous airborne predators. The dark energies of the warp have twisted these once majestic aerial warriors into forms more reminiscent of flying demonic reptiles than any conventional spacecraft.

The Heldrake’s grotesque, terrorsaur-like appearance is enhanced by sweeping wings and powerful warp-fueled engines. But beneath their monstrous exterior lies an even more chilling horror; the remnants of the individuals who were once their pilots. Consumed by the power and independence their fightercraft granted them, these pilots have become one with their vehicles, their bodies, and eventually their very souls, completely fused with the demon-engines due to the insidious influence of the warp.

The transformation is a grotesque spectacle – the corrupted heretic Astartes pilots shrink back into the interiors of their machines until they see with the craft’s auto-senses and speak through its vox grills. Over centuries spent swooping through the warp as merciless hunters, a pilot’s soul melds with that of their warp engine until they are entirely subsumed. Trapped and subservient to the murderous desires of the demon with which they now share their existence, the pilots’ physical form degenerates into a shriveled, blackened husk that pulses deep within the core of the daemon engine. Amplified by the vox arrays of the Heldrake, their screams of rage and anguish echo through the cosmos, often the first harbinger of an impending Chaos Space Marine invasion.

These metallic monstrosities traverse the void between worlds by clinging to the undersides of Chaos Space Marine attack ships, their wings folded protectively around themselves in a bat-like manner. Dark, organic cables probe outward from each Heldrake’s body to burrow into the void ship’s outer surface, siphoning off raw energy as a leech draws blood from its victim. Upon arriving in the low orbit of their target planet, the Heldrakes detach, unfurling their great wings as they plummet towards the atmosphere below.

Among these nightmarish creatures, one stands out – the Abomination. Birthed in violence and bloodshed, this Heldrake broke free of its warpsmith creators, slaughtering them upon the hour of its binding. Since its creation, the Abomination has become a legend, a horror story whispered among Imperial aircrews, leaving a trail of destruction across numerous worlds.

Ferocious in their fury, the Heldrakes resemble the great fire-breathing serpents exterminated by the Thousand Sons Legion during their initial foray into the warp and the conquest of the Planet of Sorcerers. The Sons of Magnus particularly treasure the Heldrakes, seeing in them a reflection of the Oroboros, a symbol of the servants of Tzeentch. As the Rubric Marines advance upon the enemy in tight ranks, the Heldrakes soar overhead, their metallic claws ripping enemy fighters from the skies, their gaping maws spewing hailstorms of bullets or streams of incinerating flame.

The most enlightened among the Thousand Sons warriors know a harsh truth – the Heldrakes were once their Legion’s fighter planes, their pilots surviving but forever transformed into something far darker and more terrifying. And so, the Heldrake continues its monstrous reign in the skies, a testament to the devastating power and corruption of the warp.
