Story of Ragnar Blackmane – Part 8

In the sprawling, grim universe of Warhammer 40,000, a lesser-explored narrative unfolds – that of the “Wolf Blades,” a band of warriors dispatched from the Space Wolves Chapter to serve as bodyguards and military instructors for the House of Belisarius on Terra. This exchange, once considered an honor, has over the ages morphed into something akin to an exile. The Wolf Blades are often regarded as outcasts, separated from their chapter, their native Fenris’ icy winds replaced with the stifling, intrigue-ridden atmosphere of humanity’s cradle, Terra.

The story we find ourselves exploring today begins when the venerable Space Wolf, Ragnar, arrives on Terra during a time of tumultuous unrest. An old comrade of the Great Wolf and a scion of House Belisarius had recently been assassinated, sending ripples of tension throughout the capital. Terra, it seemed, was as perilous a place as Fenris, filled with venomous snakes in the form of endless intrigues, rivalries among Imperial structures, assassination attempts, and local wars, all concealed behind the dazzling golden brilliance of the capital.

Upon his arrival, Ragnar encounters two fellow warriors – Torin the Wayfarer, and an absolute colossus of a Space Marine, Hager the Mountain. Hager, a giant even by Space Marine standards, is a unique specimen with peculiar modifications to his armor to accommodate his monstrous belly. His transformation into a Space Marine had resulted in a monstrous gain in mass, and consequently an almost insatiable need for food. Despite his formidable size and constant hunger, Hager’s combat prowess and ferocity remain unparalleled among his peers – a true testament to the indomitable spirit of the Space Wolves.

As the Space Wolves begin to navigate their way around the political labyrinth of Terra, they find themselves grappling with the fallout of a recent assassination. The Testar, the head of House Belisarius, along with his bodyguard, had been assassinated by a group of zealots, radically-minded individuals intolerant of the presence of mutants and off-worlders. Such groups are often tools of political opposition, and the assassination of a figure as important as the Testar could not have been executed without the support of other influential figures.

The role of the Wolf Blades, however, is not to untangle this political web, but rather to serve as the muscle and protection for the House of Belisarius. With some free time on their hands, Torin, Ragnar, and Hager decide to visit one of the taverns in the trade quarter, a decision that inevitably leads to a drunken brawl with a group of zealots. Despite the chaos, the Wolves managed to escape before the arbitrators arrived.

Ragnar’s first task as the future Wolf Lord was to escort Navigator Gabriella, a member of the Navis Nobility with the unique ability to guide spacecraft through the warp, to the domain of the rival House Farace. These inter-house marriages are significant events in the political life of the Navis Nobility, often serving as a conduit for espionage and furthering the endless game of power and control.

As we delve deeper into this narrative, we find ourselves drawn into a world of intrigue, power plays, and the unyielding spirit of the Space Wolves, forever caught in the balance between duty and survival. Stay tuned for the next part of this multi-part series where we explore more of the Wolf Blades’ journey on Terra.
