Welcome back to the latest installment in our deep dive series into the rich and expansive lore of Warhammer 40,000. In today’s post, we shift our focus to the formidable Primarch Mortarion and the psychic prodigy Magnus the Red. Our journey begins on the poisonous planet of Barbarus, where Mortarion, who had been leading a guerrilla war against the planet’s oppressive overlords, was about to face his greatest challenge yet.
The villages on Barbarus, once simple settlements, had transformed into resilient strongholds under Mortarion’s leadership. The inhabitants had become hardened defenders, learning from Mortarion as he moved from one settlement to another, providing guidance and protection. His efforts brought them to the cusp of a turning point in their war against the overlords. The last stronghold, a towering castle situated at the planet’s highest point, was all that remained.
The castle was a place of such toxicity that no breathing apparatus could withstand its lethal atmosphere. Yet, this was where Mortarion’s nemesis, Nar, resided. The battle seemed almost unwinnable, until a spacecraft, bearing none other than the Emperor, arrived on Barbarus. The Emperor, introducing himself simply as a well-wisher, provided provisions and an invitation for Mortarion to join his Galactic Empire.
But Mortarion, stubborn and proud, refused the offer. His response prompted the Emperor to issue a challenge – if Mortarion could capture the last stronghold alone, Barbarus would be left undisturbed. Failure, however, would mean submitting to the Emperor and swearing allegiance to his empire. The challenge was set, and Mortarion, despite the concerns of his friend Typhon, accepted.
As Mortarion faced the castle of Nar, he found his resistance to the poisonous environment pushed to its limits. His body writhed in agony as the toxic air tore him apart from the inside, his protective gear rusting and decaying. Just as death seemed imminent, the Emperor intervened, saving Mortarion and slaying Nar with a single stroke of his sword. Recovering, Mortarion knelt before the Emperor, swearing his service and thus, changing the course of his life, and the fate of Barbarus, forever.
In another corner of the galaxy, on the remote human colony of Prospero, another story was unfolding. Here, a capsule containing the Primarch Magnus had landed. Unlike his brethren, Magnus fully understood his birth, development, and even remembered his childhood. He was a psychic prodigy, regularly communicating with the Emperor via telepathy before their official reunion.
Prospero was a haven for outcasts like Magnus, a world of psychers secluded from the heart of the Imperium. Under the tutelage of the renowned psycho scholar Amon, Magnus not only learned to control his psychic abilities but also surpassed his mentor. His mastery over his psychic abilities was so profound that he became the most powerful being on Prospero.
One fateful day, Magnus peered directly into the Sea of Souls, transforming him from a mere student to an absolute master of the Warp. This marked a turning point for Magnus, as he stepped into the role of Prospero’s hero, leading the planet on a campaign that would shape its future, and his own destiny, in ways they couldn’t yet fathom.
Thus, in the vast expanse of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the intricate tapestry of these two Primarch’s lives was being woven. Stay tuned for our next chapter as we continue to explore the complex and intriguing saga of the Primarchs.
