Welcome, dear readers, to another thrilling installment of our multi-part series diving deep into the tumultuous, grimdark universe of Warhammer 40,000. Today, we delve into the enigmatic story of Lorgar, his mysterious mentor Erebus, and the charismatic Argel Tal. Grab your bolter, and let’s embark on this epic journey.
The secretive Erebus, a Chaplain who had an intimate connection with the Ruinous Powers, had quite a profound influence on his protégé Lorgar. However, the exact nature of the knowledge that Erebus passed on remains shrouded in conjecture. We know that at some point, Lorgar chose to cut ties with Erebus – a decision that seemed to be based on some shocking revelation, the details of which remain tantalisingly out of reach.
The fallout from this schism could have resulted in the first fratricidal murder amongst the Astartes. Argel Tal, a fiery orator and devoted follower of Lorgar, was caught in the crossfire of this internal rift. Had he not been embroiled in these conflicts, Tal might have ascended to be one of the most distinguished Chaplains.
Argel Tal’s talents, however, were not confined to his rhetorical prowess. His rapid elevation to the position of Chaplain of the 7th Company of the Serrated Sun Chapter marked him as the youngest warrior to occupy such a leadership role. Yet, despite his rapid ascent, Tal remained grounded. He was remembered for his ability to connect with the mortal participants of the expedition, a trait that made him an approachable figure amongst the otherwise intimidating Space Marines.
Argel Tal’s unique blend of humanity and martial prowess made him a popular figure amongst his Astartes brethren and even the elite Custodes. His friendship with Khârn, the captain of the 8th Assault Company of the World Eaters, was particularly noteworthy. Although they were polar opposites in character, they held each other in high regard.
During the Great Crusade, the Serrated Sun Chapter, along with their brothers, fought tirelessly to liberate the Galaxy from Xenos. Their mission was to spread Lorgar’s doctrine about the Divinity of the Emperor. Argel Tal, armed with two red iron blades, was a formidable swordsman, his grey armor and blue lenses reflecting his fierce determination.
The Word Bearers were a legion deeply entrenched in religious fervor. They saw the Master of Mankind as a God, his sons as demigods, and the Space Marines as angels. This unshakeable faith made the destruction of the city Monarchia on the planet Khur a devastating blow.
The Ultramarines, who were behind the destruction, did not inform Lorgar directly. Instead, they cruelly allowed the inhabitants of Khur to send a desperate plea for salvation to the Word Bearers. The journey to the devastated planet took two months of swift flight. All the while, the Ultramarines awaited their arrival in orbit, a chilling reminder of the treacherous act they had committed.
As the first captain to respond to Roboute Guilliman’s order to land on the surface, Argel Tal was ideally placed to witness the unfolding drama. Primark Guilliman and Malkador attempted to explain to Lorgar that his teachings contradicted the Imperial Truth.
Such a statement was unthinkable to the Word Bearers. They had expended colossal forces and resources in spreading their faith in the Emperor. To hear that their efforts were not only futile but criminal was a blow they could barely comprehend. The subsequent conflict resulted in the Emperor himself teleporting to the surface, forcing all 100,000 Word Bearers to their knees with a mere mental command.
In this moment of profound humiliation, Argel Tal struggled to maintain his dignity. His muscles moved against his will, his heart rebelled. It was a sobering reminder of the volatile, unpredictable universe of Warhammer 40,000 that we continue to explore together in this multi-part series. Until next time, keep your bolters loaded and your faith strong in the Emperor.
