Black Templars: Heroes of the Eternal Crusade – Part 7

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war, and at the heart of this eternal conflict stood First Captain Sigismund, a major player in the Warhammer 40,000 universe and a fascinating character to delve into. This is a continuation of our multi-part series, where we take a deep dive into the rich tapestry of Warhammer 40,000 lore.

Sigismund, First Captain of the Imperial Fists Legion, was a direct subordinate of Primarch Rogal Dorn. Known throughout the Great Crusade for his brash and headstrong nature, he was a soldier who never hesitated to plunge headfirst into the fray, the risks of the mission be damned. Some might have seen this approach as reckless, but for Sigismund, it was a testament to his exceptional prowess as a warrior. He was far from a mere mortal soldier, he was an unstoppable force of fate, a relentless and somber fighter.

Perhaps it was this indomitable spirit that led the Blood Angels Primarch Sanguinius to comment that Sigismund seemed “less my brother Dorn’s champion and more death himself.” His combat prowess became the stuff of legends among the Space Marine Legions, as he was unrivalled in his ability to ferret out and exploit enemy weaknesses.

Throughout the latter stages of the Great Crusade, Sigismund spent significant time fighting side by side with the World Eaters Legion. It was during these brutal campaigns that he formed a strong bond with Assault Captain Khârn, a loyal servant of Primarch Angron. Their camaraderie was so profound they referred to each other as ‘Oath Brothers’, a bond forged in the heat of battle and solidified in the deadly fighting pits of the World Eaters flagship, the Conqueror. It was here that Sigismund earned his ominous nickname, the Black Knight.

The World Eaters had a unique tradition of binding their weapons to their arms with chains, a practice born in their fighting pits. This brutal custom caught Sigismund’s eye, and he adopted it with enthusiastic fervor, binding his knightly weapons with dense black chains. This custom was later echoed by the Black Templars of the second founding, a testament to Sigismund’s enduring influence.

Sigismund’s story took a dramatic turn when he led a squad of Templar Brethren in a daring rescue mission aboard the crippled Eisenstein, which was under the command of Battle Captain Nathaniel Garro of the Death Guard. Garro brought alarming news of Warmaster Horus’s treachery to Rogal Dorn following the Istvan III atrocity.

Upon receiving this grave news, Dorn isolated himself to contemplate the situation’s gravity. After much deliberation, Dorn sent Sigismund on a mission to the Istvan system to assess the situation and assist any surviving loyalists. However, Sigismund was haunted by the betrayal of his former brethren.

During this time, Sigismund met Euphrati Keeler, a fervent follower of the Lectio Divinitatus and former imagist. Her unwavering faith in the Emperor provided psychic protection against Warp-spawned demons, and she would become one of the earliest Saints of the Imperial Creed. Keeler shared a harrowing vision of the potential fall of the Imperium and Sigismund’s personal fate.

This conversation deeply affected Sigismund, who, despite his usually stoic nature, found his resolve shaken. He chose to remain by Dorn’s side, leading to the passage of command of the Retribution Fleet to the veteran Captain Yad.

As the Istvan system’s grim reality unfolded, Sigismund’s role became increasingly pivotal. From the overwhelming rage in Dorn’s eyes to the betrayal of once trusted allies, Sigismund stood as a beacon of resilience and loyalty amidst the turmoil. Yet, he kept his true reasons for remaining by Dorn’s side a secret, a weight he carried like penitent chains.

With the tragic news of the Dropsite Massacre and the betrayal of the Night Lords, Iron Warriors, Alpha Legion, and Word Bearers, Sigismund’s future was set on a collision course with destiny. The vision that Euphrati Keeler had shown him was coming to pass. The end was beginning, and Sigismund stood at its precipice. Only time would tell where his fate would lead him.

Join us in the next part of this series, as we continue to unravel the complex threads of Sigismund’s story and the grim future that awaits him in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
