Cadia Stands Firm: The Planet Too Deadly for Even Demons – Part 2

Title: The Cadian Chronicles: Unyielding Warriors of the Imperium

Welcome back, fellow lore enthusiasts, to yet another deep dive into the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Today, we’re embarking on a journey to Cadia, a planet renowned for its elite warriors and their punishing regimen of training. This is the first part in our multi-part series, focusing on the legendary Cadian Shock Troops.

Cadia is a place where 72% of the population is armed and the birth rate equates to the recruitment rate. On Cadia, a child learns to shoot with a lasgun before they can read. This planet is a cradle of warriors, where by age 10, every child is tested for survival on the isolated islands of the Caduca Sea. This trial by fire ensures that by the time they reach their teenage years, these hardened youngsters can perform infantry tasks with ease and have learned the harsh reality of combat.

Joining the Youth Army, these young soldiers train alongside experienced adults in the unforgiving Cadian desert, where live ammunition is not merely acceptable but expected. The underlining philosophy here is simple – a day not spent in training is a day wasted.

Such rigorous training and high combat skills make Cadians a coveted choice among commanders across the Galaxy. Their military equipment is still considered the best, setting the standard for all Astra Militarum regiments. These generations of shock troops are born, raised, and trained in a war zone, with military science on the planet averse to training away from the battlefield.

Senior officers, often from local aristocracy, lead their soldiers into battle, instilling in them courage and discipline. Recognised as the best mortal warriors of the Imperium, Cadians are surpassed only by the Adeptus Astartes. Men and women serve on the front lines in either single-gender or mixed regiments. However, female units are typically part of the internal guard and are not deployed outside the planet.

Despite the bravado and the glory, there is a harsh reality to being a Cadian. Statistics show that only one soldier out of 1,000 returns to Cadia after deployments to other worlds. Frequent attacks by Chaos forces and high casualty rates create a grim situation, with burial places running out. The planetary leadership enacted the ‘Decipherment Law’ to solve this issue. Once a deceased’s name becomes unreadable on the gravestone, their remains are moved to a common pit to make room for others.

In Cadian society, a person’s status is directly related to their military rank. This status is influenced by both familial connections to high-ranking military officers and personal combat merits. The planetary governor of Cadia, known as the Governor Primus, holds a unique position, endowed with the power of the Supreme Commander.

Despite its harsh conditions and constant state of war, Cadia is a significantly industrialised planet. It boasts a large number of skilled workers engaged in producing military equipment, making it the largest exporter of weapons and ammunition in the region.

Yet, the planet’s proximity to the Eye of Terror casts a dark shadow over its society. The Inquisition suppresses about 100 active Chaos cults every month, and criminal activity is reportedly higher on Cadia than on any other world. This is attributed to the Warp’s malevolent influence, which stirs evil in human hearts.

The planet’s strategic location near the Cadian Gate, which provides a stable transition from the immaterium into real space, makes it a prime target for the forces of Chaos. This stability, linked to the presence of mysterious Blackstone structures or ‘Cadian Pylons’, has baffled the Adeptus Mechanicus for centuries. Despite their best efforts, they’ve yet to determine the purpose of these ancient structures.

Stay tuned for the next instalment in this series, where we delve deeper into the secrets behind these ancient structures and the role they play in Cadia’s fate. Until then, keep your lasguns at the ready and your eyes on the stars, fellow lore enthusiasts.
