Exorcists: The Untold Story of Betrayal and Dark Secrets – Part 5

In the vast and grim universe of Warhammer 40,000, the Imperium of Mankind is a beacon of hope and resilience amidst the relentless onslaught of cosmic horrors. In this blog post, we delve into the fascinating and shadowy history of one of its most enigmatic and formidable fighting forces, the Exorcists.

The Exorcists are a Space Marine chapter, the blessed warriors of the Emperor, known for their unique and perilous initiation rites. These rites involve a process that sometimes leads to unfortunate failures, a grim reality that echoes an episode in the Chapter’s early history, revealing the potential danger these fallen warriors could represent.

It all started with a proposal made by Cardinal Rodrigo Nun, a trusted agent of the ecclesiarchy, who was intrigued by the transformations he witnessed in the Exorcists. In his view, these creatures symbolized the next evolutionary step in the warrior race leading humanity. Guided by whispers of the dark gods, the Cardinal gathered a group of recruits deemed unfit and escaped with them into the warp, forming his vile host known as the Swords of Epiph.

However, this heretical act could not be tolerated by the Exorcists, as it threatened not only their honor but also the veil of secrecy that shrouded their rituals. Thus, a purging crusade was undertaken, led by Captain Von Armadel. This relentless pursuit led to the eventual eradication of the Swords of Epiphany.

The gene-seed used in the creation of the Exorcists is another aspect shrouded in mystery. While rumors suggest the lineage might be traced back to the Grey Knights, or even the Emperor himself, the truth lies in the gene-seed of the Imperial Fists, the sons of Dorn. The Imperium strictly prohibits the use of traitor’s material, maintaining the purity of the noble lineage.

The Exorcists are also known for their distinctive subcultures, referred to as Lamentations. Each Lamentation is dedicated to specific areas of practice and knowledge, preserving its wisdom for future generations. The most influential of these is the group that requires a feat of defeating a fully manifested demon.

The Exorcists are far from idle, despite falling out of favor with the ecclesiarchy and the Black Templars for their use of sorcery. They have participated in numerous campaigns, such as the Ashen War, a bloody rebellion led by cultists on the Cardinal world of Diamar. This conflict revealed the weak Imperial control over the region, sparking uprisings and invasions across the entire subsector.

Among the most notable battles was the one against the Dark Lord of Many Names, a demonic entity known on Diamar as the Horned God. The Exorcists were instrumental in the Imperial Counterattack, leading to the cornering of the demon prince in the ruins of the Dead world Belago. The ensuing battle, against thousands of fanatical followers and several chaos warbands of the Night Lords, was one for the ages.

Stay tuned as we continue to explore the fascinating lore of Warhammer 40,000, delving into the mysteries, battles, and heroes of the Imperium.
