Title: The Exorcists: Unveiling the Unsung Heroes of the Imperium
In the annals of Warhammer 40,000, few Space Marine chapters have stories as compelling and enigmatic as the Exorcists. Their tale is a saga of relentless warfare, resilience, and a peculiar resistance to demonic influence, all set against the backdrop of the grimdark future. This is the first instalment in a multi-part series focusing on the Exorcists, their campaigns, and the role they’ve played in the wider Warhammer universe.
As the story goes, the Exorcists arrived with a formidable fleet of 17 vessels, including two battle barges, three strike cruisers, and several squadrons of escort and strike ships. Their mighty armada bolstered the loyalist forces in planetary assaults, proving invaluable in the war’s final stages. Initially, the Exorcists reinforced the front lines, but a small detachment was later sent to assist the Sons of Medusa on CNX.
However, due to fundamental differences in character and objectives, this tactical group struggled to cooperate effectively with the larger Sons of Medusa contingent and was eventually recalled. The first major campaign in the Badab sub-sector was the invasion of Sagan, one of the greatest battles and likely the beginning of the end for the secessionist.
The Exorcists were tasked with attacking the secessionist ships and boarding them with a secondary mission to capture the outpost world of Sean 5. During the battle, the chapter seized an unexpected prize: the armed merchant ship Soyu Maru, which was attempting to transport a large quantity of munitions off-planet for the defence of the Enderman cluster. After a gruelling three-hour boarding action against the Mantis Warriors, the Exorcists captured the ship and its valuable cargo intact.
As the assault on the Badab system began, the Exorcists became a cornerstone of the Loyalist forces due to their substantial numbers. They fought in the bloody battles for the world of Perus, maintaining their reputation despite the intense conflict. During the assault on Badab itself, the chapter was assigned the task of capturing the heavily fortified star Fort Sentinel Sigma, while their escort ships formed part of the fleet blockading the system.
The Exorcists successfully seized the station, annihilating its entire garrison despite desperate resistance led by the notorious captain of the Astral Claws, Coran Sumat. However, the blockade failed when anarchy erupted on the surface of Badab Prime. The Karadon overloaded the Hive reactors, initiating a chain reaction that doomed the planet.
In the chaotic aftermath, the Exorcists were forced to fire on any ascending vessels that could not confirm their Loyalist status, leading to the tragic killing of loyal Aartis. Despite this tragic turn of events, a ship carrying many of Huron’s inner circle and the body of their lord managed to slip through the blockade.
In the years that followed, the Exorcists participated in several less significant engagements. In the year 972, they played a crucial role in the purging of Aidia. Lord Inquisitor Tadas Catus of the Ordo Malleus led the planet-wide resistance on Aidia, banishing a million demon hosts back into the warp and slaying the demon prince Karpathy the Restrainer. The deployment of the Exorcists’ second company on the planet was critical to the inquisitor’s victory, as their librarians performed rites of banishment unknown outside of their chapter’s cult.
In the year 999, their forces defended Armageddon, participated in the defence of the Cadan Gate, and took part in the Indomitus Crusade. Interestingly, with the emergence of the Great Rift, the Galaxy was engulfed in horrors. The Exorcists, known for their resilience against corruption, were needed by the Imperium more than ever, leading to their strike teams being deployed across the Galaxy, even into the darkness of the Dark Imperium.
Despite the many challenges they faced, the Exorcists continued to prove their worth to the Imperium, defending the realms of man against all threats, both seen and unseen. Yet, as with all tales of valor, the story of the Exorcists is far from over. As the darkness of the 41st Millennium continues to unfold, the Exorcists stand ready, unyielding in their duty to the Emperor and the Imperium.
