Title: “The Raven Guard: Shadows of War”
In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. The battlegrounds of the 41st millennium are a cacophony of terror and destruction, where heroes and villains alike are forged. Today, let’s take a moment to delve into the lore of the enigmatic and deadly Raven Guard, focusing on the first three companies: the Black Wings, the Shadowborn, and the Ghost Stalkers.
The Black Wings, the first company of Raven Guard, are the epitome of swift and lethal warfare. Their approach to battle is a dance of death, aiming to decapitate the enemy at the first opportunity. The Raven Guard’s path of war is distilled into its purest form in their hands – victory achieved by the fastest, most pragmatic means. To aid them in their duty, most Black Wings prefer combat gear that allows them to move like a shadow across the battlefield. For the Primaris Space Marines among them, this often means donning the lighter Phobos armor and relying on their battle-hardened instincts to evade enemy fire.
However, they aren’t afraid to don their Tactical Dreadnought armor when facing a particularly stubborn resistance, often paired with lightning claws to shred their enemy’s ranks. The Black Wings favor swift strike ships over cumbersome ground vehicles, their missions depending more on speed and surprise than firepower. Yet, the Black Wings carry another duty – they are the keepers of the forbidden Apothecarium of the Raven Spire, standing vigil to prevent the beastial combat from gaining physical form.
Veterans who ascend to the Black Wings leave behind outward signs of rank and privilege, adopting the designation of the unit to which they are attached. For the Raven Guard, honor is not a shiny badge worn on the chest; it’s a flame that burns in the soul, buried so deep its shimmer does not attract unwanted attention.
The Shadowborn, the second company of the Raven Guard, are the embodiment of the Chapter’s main skills. They are the masters of the art of war and shadows, able to predict their enemy’s movements under the most challenging conditions. They move like phantoms, their presence hidden behind a shroud of shadows, striking with lethal precision when the moment is right.
The Shadowborn extensively utilize two subdivisions of Primaris: Reavers and Infiltrators. They excel at disrupting enemy communications and sabotaging key targets. Shadow Captain Az Salari even expressed ambitions to field forces exclusively comprised of Phobos armored Marines, adding another Vanguard Squad to the Chapter’s roster.
The Ghost Stalkers, the third company, are the stalwarts of the Raven Guard. They eschew the subtlety of their brethren, relying on sudden and overwhelming force to silence their foes. The Ghost Stalkers adhere to the trifold path of Shadow, often depicted as a trident drawn with a short blade or a lightning-fast three-talon claw. The mastery of one path promises victory, two paths make triumph likely, and the fulfillment of all three paths ensures the enemy’s defeat.
In the next part of our series, we will delve deeper into the lore of the Ghost Stalkers and their unique approach to warfare. Stay tuned, faithful reader, as we continue our exploration of the Raven Guard, the silent executioners in the Emperor’s service.
