Title: Shrouded Prophecies and Ancient Secrets: The Saga of Erebus, First Chaplain of the Word Bearers
It was a time of tumultuous violence, the chaotic echoes of which reverberated through the Warp, bringing the dark Gods dangerously close to our reality. Erebus, in those early years of his ascension to the position of the first Chaplain of the Word Bearers, was not yet steeped in the full mastery of his prophetic abilities. Nevertheless, he possessed an uncanny knack for sensing the tremors of the future in abstract forms.
In the days leading up to the first landing on the moon of Davin, a world being brought to compliance, Erebus was plagued by restless nights. He foresaw an event of towering importance even as the Imperial forces plotted to instill secular truths among the local population. Erebus knew better – the fate of Davin was as clear to him as his own reflection in a mirror. The planet, akin to Culus with its sun-scorched lands and ancient secrets, was on the precipice of a profound transformation.
While the Luna Wolves and Word Bearers waged battles against the frenzied, resistant locals, Erebus was drawn into the desert, a place where mysterious temples and tombs lay hidden. He understood that the locals’ suicidal attacks were not borne out of madness, but a desperate attempt to distract the Imperials from the secrets buried in the sands.
Erebus found himself standing before the ancient city Temple, its crumbling stone walls etched into an eight-pointed star. The temple, though not as grand as the cathedrals of Culus, was built with a profound understanding of the connection between the real and the unreal. When the sun was ideally positioned, the towers cast eerie shadows resembling horns and claws on the ground. The temple was adorned with stone dragons and gargoyles, lending it an air of abandonment and desolation.
However, Erebus was not alone. A grotesque priest, treating the warrior as a tardy servant, was his sole companion within the temple. A dizzying sense of déjà vu struck Erebus, the temple’s atmosphere of death and power proving intoxicating. The priest, referring to Erebus as ‘The Herald’, revealed ancient frescos of angels battling demons, knights clashing with monsters. In the heart of the temple lay an altar adorned with inscriptions mirroring those on Erebus’s own body. The walls were covered in images of a crude flint blade, a weapon Erebus realized was integral to an event he had been moving towards. His new task: find this weapon and bring it to Davin.
Erebus, steadfast in his allegiance to the powers, continued to operate the secret Lodge of the Covenant. He honed his skills, perfectly playing the part of a faithful follower of the teachings of the Primar about the Emperor’s divinity. The chastisement of Lorgar, Master of Mankind, by the Emperor for his inefficient warfare and religious misconceptions, opened a window for Erebus to express his true views to the Primar.
The burning of Monarchia and the subsequent public punishment dealt a heavy blow to the Word Bearers, sowing seeds of doubt and shame. Lorgar, bereft of guiding principles, was in deep crisis. Here, Erebus, along with Kor Phaeron, another adherent of the old Culus faith, proposed a new path to Lorgar, one inspired by the ideas of the Covenant. The duo skillfully manipulated Lorgar, turning the Monarchia incident into a tool for guilt and redemption. It was a hard pill for Lorgar to swallow, admitting his own mistakes, but in the end, he accepted this proposed course, setting in motion a series of events that would change the course of history forever.
